Bembibre brings together the Festival del Botillo, religious and modern architectural history, museum themes, and nature and activity offerings. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: an annual culinary festival, historic buildings, exhibitions, or adventure courses. You can also plan your journey with specific locations in mind: a train station is in the La Estación district, while the road information covers both the A-6 corridor and the N-VI.

Botillo tradition and festival

The Festival del Botillo has been held annually since its first edition in 1973. It has been designated a Festival of National Tourist Interest and celebrates the emblematic Botillo sausage. Both the culinary tradition and this special designation are among the festival's defining features.

Cultural events have accompanied the festival since its early years. The I Semana Cultural was held in 1984, and in 2000 the Feria Agroalimentaria de la Villa de Bembibre was added. This timeline illustrates different aspects of the program: alongside Botillo, cultural events and an agri-food fair also feature in the festival's history.

If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

Churches, architectural history and architecture

The Iglesia de San Pedro was formerly a synagogue and was converted into a Christian church in 1490. Other historical aspects take center stage at the Santuario del Ecce Homo: it houses a movable 15th-century Gothic figure of Ecce Homo, which is carried in a procession every seven years.

The history of the Santuario's construction spans several periods. The present-day sanctuary was built in the 19th century over a building dating from the 17th or 18th century; French troops had burned down this older building during the Peninsular War. This distinction is useful when looking at the area's history: San Pedro is associated with a specific change of use in 1490, while the Santuario is notable for an older sculpture and several construction phases.

Several modernist houses are located around the Plaza Mayor and on nearby streets, especially on Avenida Susana González. They were built between 1868 and 1932. These streets and squares provide specific landmarks if you are interested in Bembibre's architecture; the broad construction period complements the churches' specific historical dates.

Museums and collections

Guided tours are available for the geology and paleontology section of the Museo Alto Bierzo (Casa de las Culturas). The collection at the Museo del Bierzo Alto includes, among other things, votive altars dedicated to Asturian deities. The museum themes mentioned thus range from geology and paleontology to religious dedications to the Asturians' deities.

La Devesa and adventure courses

La Devesa is a natural area with species of high ecological value. The Parque Aventura La Devesa covers 9,000 m² and offers three signposted levels of varying difficulty, as well as courses for competition and training. The two offerings have different focuses: the natural area is notable for the ecological value of its species, while the adventure courses feature graded difficulty levels and courses for training and competition.

If you would like to visit the Parque Aventura La Devesa, check the access conditions in advance.

Getting to Bembibre

A train station is located in the La Estación district and is operated or owned by Adif; the railway line traditionally known as León–Monforte runs through it. Check current train services before your trip so you can plan your journey based on the connection available on your travel dates.

Bembibre is on the A-6 corridor, which connects Madrid with A Coruña. The N-VI national road and its former route run through the urban area. These are two different pieces of information for road travel: the A-6 describes the corridor between the two cities, while the N-VI and its former route run specifically through Bembibre's urban area.
