Balboa lies at the foot of the Sierra de Ancares. The Balboa River runs through the municipality and gives its name to the valley’s main town. The valley’s landscape is characterised by well-tended chestnut groves and numerous naturally growing oak forests. When planning a hotel stay in Balboa, you can focus on different things: the landscape, the town’s history or a cultural event.

Castle and Building History

Castillo de Balboa retains a large part of its surrounding walls. It stands on a hill above the valley, where the Balboa River and the Arroyo Areal converge. At the castle, you can therefore look at both the surviving walls and its position at the confluence as concrete aspects of the structure.

The Iglesia de Santa Marina de Balboa was built in the 16th century over an earlier Romanesque church. Construction was entrusted to Lucas Formente in 1579. The church thus brings together two building phases: the earlier Romanesque church and the later 16th-century church.

Culture and Pallozas

Casa de las Gentes is a cultural centre with a museum area, an event hall and a tourist office. The museum area permanently displays works by local artist Domingo Gonzalez, including wooden sculptures and wood reliefs. Opening hours are listed as Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. As opening times may change, check them before your visit.

In Balboa, pallozas have been transformed into “Pallozas Vivas”: places for meeting and remembrance. This approach adds another cultural focus in the town to the castle and church.

Landscape and the Camino

The Camino Natural de la Mirada Circular begins in Guímara and ends in Balboa. The final stretch of the route descends to Balboa through centuries-old chestnut trees. Its endpoint is by the church and the municipal hostel building. The starting point, the course of the final stretch and the destination offer different points of reference if you are interested in routes through the landscape. The valley’s chestnut groves and oak forests form a distinct landscape of their own.

Annual Festivals

The Magosto Celta takes place in November on the weekend after the All Saints’ Day long weekend. The festival features traditional music and roasted chestnuts. The Foliada Feroz brings traditional music and dancing to Balboa in early March; its programme includes concerts, open folias and traditional dance classes. The two festivals therefore differ both in timing and focus: the Magosto combines music with chestnuts, while the Foliada combines music with dance. Check the dates and programmes before your trip.

By the Balboa River, Tronco Sonoro combines crafts and blues with blues masterclasses, short documentaries and a craft fair. Its programme offers another type of event, distinct from the music and dance on offer at the other two festivals. Together, the castle, cultural venues, landscape and events show different sides of Balboa that can help you plan your trip.
