Prado de la Guzpeña brings together mining history, landscapes and named routes.

Mining history in the municipality

The municipality of Prado de la Guzpeña’s more recent mining history spans the period from 1874 to 1985. Up to 800 people worked in coal mining. At the end of the 19th century, a railway line running through Prado de la Guzpeña was built as a result of the mining boom. The “Chimenea de Prado” stands near the mines and is 36 metres high. It was part of a facility comprising three chimneys and twelve ovens, built in 1960 to convert hard coal into coke.

The route through Robledo de la Guzpeña leads to the “La Prometida” mine entrance and runs alongside the “Chimenea de Prado”. It thus connects two specific points of reference to the local mining history.

Lagoon, landscape and archaeology

Mining created an artificial lagoon beside the stream near the village. Right next to it is the “Zona de Recreo de Prado”, with barbecue areas for meals cooked over a wood fire. Check the current conditions of use before your visit.

Meadows, oak groves and hedgerows surround Prado de la Guzpeña and provide a habitat for the local fauna, including the grey partridge. Alongside traces of mining, the landscape and its wildlife are also in focus.

“Peña del Castro” lies between Robledo de la Guzpeña and Peñacorada. In pre-Roman times, it was the site of a hillfort belonging to the Astures people. This archaeological reference adds a much earlier chapter to the area’s history, complementing its more recent industrial history. A hillfort is a fortified settlement.

Trails with different points of interest

The “Subida a Peñacorada por Prado de la Guzpeña” hike starts in the village. The “Ruta BTT Puente Almuhey - Cistierna” mountain biking route passes through Prado de la Guzpeña. There is also a linear stage from Prado de la Guzpeña to Puente Almuhey, listed as a 5.9-kilometre route of moderate difficulty.

These details offer different points of reference when choosing a route: the starting point of a hike in the village, a mountain biking route through Prado de la Guzpeña, or a linear stage with a specified distance and difficulty.
