Modúbar De San Cibrián lies in a valley surrounded by cultivated land and oak groves. Here, your trip combines scenery and culture with practical opportunities for hiking. Notable landmarks include the Fuente de los Mártires, the parish church and excavated chapel remains. The stages of the Ruta del Destierro on the Camino del Cid also make it easy to plan your visit: one stage ends here, and the next begins.

Landscape and the Fuente de los Mártires

The Fuente de los Mártires lies about 500 metres north of the village. It is the source of the Río Viejo, also called the Modúbar, and forms a small lagoon where water from the surrounding plateau collects. The remains of an old grain mill can be seen beside the spring. The approximate distance and direction help you get your bearings when including the spring in your travel plans.

Church and historical traces

The present-day parish church of San Pedro de Antioquía, also called Cátedra de San Pedro, was built over the former monastery of Santa María in the second half of the 16th century. It preserves a Romanesque tower dating from the 11th century, whose spiral staircase leads to the Renaissance bell tower. The church also contains a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century. It probably came from the former church of Santa María or the monastery of San Martín. The different dates highlight the contrast between the Romanesque features and the later church building.

The former monastery of San Martín was founded in 944 and housed 34 monks in 975. The excavated remains of the chapel of San Cornelio and San Ciprián date from the 11th to the 13th centuries. These monastic and chapel connections extend the historical perspective beyond the present-day parish church.

Hiking on stages and local routes

The Ruta del Destierro on the Camino del Cid places Modúbar De San Cibrián on a defined sequence of stages: Stage 2 comes from Burgos and ends in the village; Stage 3, to Covarrubias, starts here. In addition, four hiking routes have been established in Modúbar. For planning your hike, the information is therefore distinct: the Camino del Cid names the stages and their destinations, while the four routes make up the local hiking offer.

Annual festivals

According to the municipal festival description, the details listed for the Cátedra de San Pedro de Antioquía festival are February 22 and a solemn Mass. For the Virgen del Rosario, the municipal festival description lists the first Sunday in October, a procession and dances in honour of the Virgin.
