Explore Espinosa De Los Monteros through its historic buildings, a heraldic route through streets and squares, and hiking trails with different routes. The area also offers landscapes of valleys, forests and pastureland, as well as Pasiega culture. When planning your stay, you can give different weight to architecture, hiking and local traditions.

Getting your bearings in town

At the entrance to town is the railway station on the Ferrocarril de la Robla line, which connects La Robla in León with Bilbao. If you are planning to travel by train, check current passenger services separately. The Museo Etnográfico Cuatro Ríos Pasiegos is at Calle Campo 10, another named destination in town.

Renaissance and local architecture

The Torre de los Azulejos dates from the second half of the 16th century and has been protected as a BIC since 1949. Its Renaissance window is decorated with azulejos. Different building phases meet at the Iglesia de Santa Cecilia: the 16th-century Renaissance church has Gothic remains, and construction began in 1527 on the site of a Romanesque church. A column from this predecessor church survives in the south wall.

The Ruta Heráldica offers another perspective on the architectural heritage. The route passes through the streets, squares and corners of Espinosa De Los Monteros, drawing attention to towers, palaces, churches, manor houses and traditional houses of Montañes architecture. Individual architectural features thus form part of a broader impression of the variety of historic architecture in the town.

Comparing hiking trails

The Senda del Monte Edilla is a signposted, moderately difficult 9-kilometre loop. The estimated duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes; the route connects Espinosa De Los Monteros with the Monte Edilla oak forest. The GR 1006 Ruta de los Monteros has different specifications: this signposted, difficult long-distance trail runs one way for 80 kilometres from Espinosa De Los Monteros to Oña; the estimated duration is 23 hours. The two routes therefore differ in difficulty and distance, as well as in their course and estimated time.

The PR-BU 88 Entre Prados is an easy out-and-back route connecting Quintanilla de los Prados and Espinosa De Los Monteros through hay meadows, huts and a dense oak forest. The Camino de Noceda loop starts in Espinosa De Los Monteros and runs through green meadows to the Vallejas beech forest, which lies at the foot of impressive limestone cliffs. Both descriptions offer a different impression of the landscape from the GR 1006’s long-distance figures.

Valleys and Pasiega culture

The municipality of Espinosa De Los Monteros is arranged around three small, narrow valleys formed by the rivers Lunada, Rioseco and La SĂa. Along the roads heading north stretches a landscape of native forests, heathland, green livestock pastures, rocky peaks and scattered Pasiego huts.

Pasiega culture includes the seasonal movement of families, in connection with livestock farming, to higher-altitude pastures between spring and autumn. The use of pastures across the seasons is therefore part of the cultural context that shapes the region’s landscape.

RomerĂa and recreation by the RĂo Trueba

The Romería de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves takes place every year on August 5 in Las Machorras. It includes a procession and traditional dances and has been designated a FITR since 2001. Eight dancers take part in the romería, along with the figures of Mayoral, Rabadán and Bobo. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the annual programme in advance.

The Piscinas Naturales de La Presa are located by the Torre de los Velasco, in the area of the Espinosa De Los Monteros reservoir. They offer opportunities for swimming and recreation, green spaces, picnic areas and a prepared walking path along the RĂo Trueba. These facilities and amenities are subject to seasonal or local conditions.
