Cogollos: Built Heritage and Routes
Accommodation in Cogollos
Townscape and protected buildings
The historic town center of Cogollos is characterized by compact blocks of buildings and continuous stretches of streets. As a result, the layout of the town itself, as well as individual sights, is part of the destination’s cultural and historical heritage. If you are looking for a hotel in Cogollos, you can plan your trip around whether local history, the routes described here, or the feast day of San Román is your priority.
Sights include the ruins of the Iglesia de San Román and the tower of the old prison complex. Under the municipal urban planning regulations, the parish church of San Pedro and the traditional bodegas are fully protected. The Antigua Cárcel is protected as part of its surrounding area. Cogollos’s local cultural heritage thus includes various buildings and forms of protection.
Feast day and routes
San Román is celebrated in Cogollos on November 18. If you would like to plan your stay around this feast day, check the specific dates before booking.
The Vereda de la Plaza is 2 km long and leads from the Plaza via Prado de Fuentechada to Hontanilla and Arroyo Serrano. It crosses the Cogollos River and reaches the Fuentechada picnic area. If you prefer a shorter route, at 2 km the Vereda de la Plaza is 3.5 km shorter than the 5.5 km Vereda from the Madrid–France road.
At 5.5 km, the Vereda from the Madrid–France road is longer. It runs via San Pedro, La Olma, Castillo, Corrales, and Alto la Esquina to Otoralbos, then reaches the Dehesa forest via Pago del Castillo. On the Vereda de la Plaza, you cross the Cogollos River and reach the Fuentechada picnic area; the longer Vereda takes you via Pago del Castillo to the Dehesa forest.
The Vereda del Corral del Monte runs along the Robledal de Cogollos and crosses Arroyo de los Vallejos. It offers different landscape features from the Vereda de la Plaza: there, the Cogollos River and the Fuentechada picnic area are key waypoints, while here they are the Robledal and Arroyo de los Vallejos.
River and road connections
The Cogollos River rises within the municipal area; its riverbed, banks, and surrounding areas are protected there. The river is therefore both a geographical reference point for Cogollos and part of the protected landscape.
There are two roads to distinguish when finding your way around. The BU-141 connects Cogollos with Valdorros and is part of the secondary regional road network. The A-1 runs north–south through the central part of the municipal area and passes the town center. While the BU-141 describes the connection with Valdorros, the A-1 places the town center within the course of the motorway and the municipal area.
