Villarejo del Valle lies in the Valle del Tiétar and the Barranco de las Cinco Villas, at the foot of Torozo and the Riscos de Villarejo. The town is situated at an altitude of 825 metres and is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. Mountain scenery, hiking trails and traces of local history define different aspects of this destination.

Hiking Trails and Planning Your Time

Los Arrieros is a hiking route in Villarejo del Valle, listed as an 11.6-kilometre out-and-back trail with a walking time of about 3.1 hours. Los Cercaos offers a different time commitment: this circular route is 3.1 kilometres long and takes approximately 1.3 hours. The details about length, route type and walking time can help you compare the two hikes based on the time you have available. El Torozo is also known as a mountain hiking route in Villarejo del Valle; no walking time is listed here for this route.

The landscape provides a striking geographical setting for the hikes: Torozo and the Riscos de Villarejo lie at the foot of the town, while the Barranco de las Cinco Villas and the Valle del Tiétar describe the wider surroundings. The Mirador de la Mesita del Calvario is on the Senda de las Cinco Villas and offers views of almost the entire Barranco. If hiking is part of your travel plans, you can consider the routes and the landscape as two related aspects of your stay, without treating the different details for each trail as if they were the same.

Buildings and Local History

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé Apóstol dates from the 15th century and was built in the Isabelline Gothic style. Inside are Baroque altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. The area around the church is also considered an example of traditional architecture in the Barranco de las Cinco Villas. This building therefore lets you distinguish between the older church architecture and the furnishings added later.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Gracia is dedicated to the patron saint of Villarejo del Valle. It is built from granite blocks, and its covered façade is symmetrical and well proportioned. Another small chapel, the Ermita de San Antón, is a masonry building with a barrel vault and may date from the 17th century. Inside is an altar made of Talavera ceramics. The two buildings offer different architectural impressions: the granite façade of Nuestra Señora de Gracia on the one hand, and the vault and ceramic altar of San Antón on the other.

People and professions also have their place in local history. The Vivienda del músico López Álmagro is associated with the composer and harmonium professor López Álmagro, who spent the final years of his life in Villarejo del Valle. On Plaza de España, the wrought-iron Monumento al Arriero commemorates the local muleteers, a profession that was widespread in the municipality’s history. The monument is located on the square’s wall.

The Rollo de Jurisdicción Villarejo del Valle stands next to a fountain dating from 1837. There are three heads at its top. Its position beside the fountain and this striking detail give the monument a tangible connection to the townscape. Along with the churches, chapels and Arriero monument, the Rollo reveals further aspects of the area’s historical heritage.

Festivals and Seasonal Swimming

On January 17, pets are brought to the Ermita de San Antón for the San Antón festival to receive the saint’s blessing. San Bartolo is celebrated on August 24 with bull-running events and a verbena. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the current dates and programme details with the municipality in advance.

The natural swimming pool in Villarejo del Valle is a bathing option on hot summer days. It is not listed in the Castilla y León bathing water register. Check the latest local notices before swimming.
