Discover El Oso through three themes: seasonal lagoons, birdlife and cultural heritage. The Centro Lagunas de la Moraña and the Ruta la Laguna del Oso add an interpretation centre and a circular trail to these highlights. If you are looking for hotels for your trip, you can plan your visits around whether you are most interested in the landscape, nature or local history.

Las Lagunas de El Oso Throughout the Year

Las Lagunas de El Oso are temporary lagoons with fluctuating water levels. They hold water in autumn and winter, while drying out during the summer months. The season is therefore an important consideration when exploring the lagoon landscape: water levels do not remain constant, but follow this seasonal pattern.

Their protected status is also part of the wetland’s character. Las Lagunas de El Oso are listed under code AV-15 in the Catálogo de Zonas Húmedas de Interés Especial de Castilla y León. They were listed by Decreto 125/2001 of 19 April. If you would like to explore the area’s nature, you can also find information at the Centro Lagunas de la Moraña and along the Ruta la Laguna del Oso.

The Centro Lagunas de la Moraña

The Centro Lagunas de la Moraña is open Monday to Sunday, in the morning or afternoon, by prior appointment. Arrange your appointment in advance; arrangements may change. Private transport is recommended for travelling to the centre.

The building is influenced by Mudéjar architecture. Inside, information is spread across two exhibition levels and a basement equipped for workshops. Topics include greylag geese, great bustards, cranes and the Spanish imperial eagle. The centre thus combines its architectural design with the region’s birdlife. There is also a rooftop viewing area on one of the towers, offering panoramic views.

Circular Trail and Respect for the Wetland

The Ruta la Laguna del Oso is a circular trail starting in El Oso. It passes through the Área Recreativa de Las Lagunillas and by two waterbird observation points. It then continues across the cereal-growing plain, where you may see kites, kestrels and harriers, among other birds. The route therefore highlights both the wetland landscape and the neighbouring plain and its birdlife.

Visitors are asked to respect the area: stay on the signposted paths and do not approach the wetland. You should also avoid walking with animals in the areas near the lagoon. Keep these guidelines in mind when planning your route.

Local History and Cultural Sights

The Museo al Aire Libre de El Oso is an ethnographic museum. Its sections cover subjects such as community life, everyday household life and agricultural work. They aim to help preserve and enhance the town’s cultural heritage. Its focus therefore differs from the nature themes of the Centro Lagunas de la Moraña.

Architectural and cultural monuments also offer insight into the history of El Oso. The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol dates from the 16th century. In front of the church, the Verraco Vettón is displayed in a small square. Three crosses stand in front of the Ermita de Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios; known as El Calvario, they form part of the local Vía Crucis. El Oso also has a Vía Crucis dating from the 18th century.

The Ruta Teresiana is a spiritual highlight. It forms part of the «De la Cuna al Sepulcro» route and leads visitors in El Oso to significant local architectural and cultural monuments associated with the spiritual heritage of Santa Teresa de Jesús. Check that the route is available before travelling.

Annual Festivals

Traditional festivals include San Isidro on 15 May, the summer festivals from the first week of September to 8 September, the feast of the Virgen de los Remedios on the second Sunday in November, and El Febrerito on the last Saturday in February. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for your planned year of travel. This will help you combine the seasonal lagoons, nature experiences and cultural sights with the right time for your stay.
