Arenas De San Pedro between Gredos and Tiétar

Arenas De San Pedro is the main town in the Lower Tiétar Valley and lies on the southern side of Gredos. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of attractions in the town and surrounding area: the history of Castillo de Don Álvaro de Luna, church and monastery art, and routes and landscapes. This lets you decide whether to spend more time exploring historic buildings, going for a bike ride or visiting outdoor destinations.

Enduro descents and guided routes

In the El Berrocal area, which has a pump track zone, Enduro Arenas features three descents for beginners. They are suitable for beginners and children; the stated length is approximately 500 metres, with an elevation drop of 80 metres. The Enduro descent Cruz de la Tendera, also known as “El Tranco,” has a different route description: it is 1.2 kilometres long, with an elevation drop of 250 metres. Open areas alternate with rocky sections, and the route ends in a scenic spot among pine trees.

If you are considering a guided bike tour, such routes are offered from the centre of Arenas. Their itineraries are tailored to the preferred duration and difficulty level. This lets you assess a tour according to two specific criteria rather than deciding on distance alone. The information about El Berrocal and Cruz de la Tendera also gives you an idea of how different the descents described here are.

Castle, church and historic architecture

Castillo de Don Álvaro de Luna was built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries at the behest of the Buen Condestable Ruy López Dávalos. In 1931, it was declared a historic and artistic monument. Today, the Castillo is used as a municipal auditorium. Its history, heritage protection and present-day use therefore belong to different chapters in the town’s story.

Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción also brings together architectural history and preserved details. It features a late-Gothic style dating from the end of the 14th century. Inside, the church preserves an original Gothic pulpit and a 16th-century grille. If you are interested in architecture, these distinct features help draw your attention not only to the building’s period, but also to individual elements of its interior.

The museum at the Monastery of San Pedro de Alcántara displays an extensive selection of 17th- and 18th-century Baroque art in three rooms. Another architectural highlight is the Palacio Real de Don Luis de Borbón y Farnesio: its main façade features a granite portico with six columns. Along with the castle and parish church, the palace adds a distinctive façade detail to the picture of Arenas’s architecture.

River landscapes, caves and a longer stage

The natural swimming pools are located in the riverbed of the Río Arenal, along the road to El Hornillo. Another scenic destination lies nearby: the Cuevas del Águila are in Ramacastañas, nine kilometres from Arenas De San Pedro and outside the town centre. Their main chamber is 20 metres high, and the walls maintain a constant temperature of 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The riverbed and caves offer two different kinds of natural attraction to consider when choosing your outings.

For a longer route, the first stage of the Ruta Teresiana El Confesor runs for 28 kilometres from Arenas de San Pedro to Cuevas del Valle. GPX, KLM and TRB tracks for this route are available to download. You can use these files to include the stage in your own plans and consider its route as a destination in its own right, alongside the cycling descents and places within the town.
