Campañó: Heritage and Trails in Parque Forestal da Tomba
Accommodation in Campañó
Campañó can be explored for trip planning through two distinct highlights: its local heritage and Parque Forestal da Tomba, with its network of trails. Petroglyphs, church art and stone crosses offer specific points of interest on the cultural side; the park focuses on trails, a viewpoint and several access routes. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you would rather spend more time exploring historical sites or walking among the greenery.
Heritage in Campañó
There are petroglyphs—symbols carved into rock—at Castro de Fiestoso and Castro do Outeiro. Campañó is also home to six Mámoas. Various objects and pottery fragments were found near Castro de Sineiro. Together, these sites and finds offer different starting points for exploring local archaeology.
The parish church offers a different perspective on the past. Campañó’s original parish church had Romanesque design features; construction of the current main chapel began in the early 18th century. The parish church also houses a Gothic image of the Virxe do O dating from the 14th century. These dates refer to different parts and periods: the original church, the start of construction of the current main chapel, and the image.
Stone crosses, known as cruceiros, are scattered throughout Campañó. A specific example stands in the village of Balseira: this cruceiro is the oldest in Campañó and dates from the 16th century.
Annual festivals
Festival days also provide a seasonal reference point. Campañó’s patron saint festival in honour of San Pedro is traditionally celebrated on 29 June, followed by San Paio on 30 June. The Virxe das Dores is celebrated on 17 and 18 September. The annual programme may vary. If you are travelling for a festival, check the specific programme for that year.
Parque Forestal da Tomba: Trails and directions
Parque Forestal da Tomba has 17 kilometres of trails. If you would like to plan time for walks or hikes, you can include the park as a separate activity; the trail length gives you a concrete idea of its scale. The central car park is next to the Mirador do Torreiro viewpoint, placing both landmarks right beside each other.
By car, you can reach the park from the Cabaleiro roundabout in Campañó via the turn-off from the VG-4.8. There is also another car access route from Polígono do Vao. Road and trail conditions can change, so check them before setting off.
The park is close to Pontevedra city centre and can be reached on foot from there. A walking route from Pontevedra to the park passes through Xunqueira da Gándara, the motorway service road, and the areas of Ribeiro and O Casal de Rei in Campañó. For directions, you therefore have both the car access points mentioned above and a described walking route.
