Arcade lies at the innermost end of the Ría de Vigo, where the Río Verdugo and Enseada de San Simón meet in the rhythm of the tides. The riverine landscape, oyster tradition and a range of beaches and walking routes give the area different points of interest. When planning your trip, the reason for your visit may therefore matter: a visit during the Festa da Ostra, time at the river beach, or a route between the sea and the river.

Landscape between the Río Verdugo and the Ría de Vigo

Along the Paseo Marítimo, the waters of the Río Verdugo and Enseada de San Simón meet in this landscape shaped by both river and coast. The Río Verdugo is 41 kilometres long and flows into the Ría de Vigo between Arcade and Ponte Sampaio. The tides are part of the character of this estuary landscape. Enseada de San Simón is included in the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation; in Galicia’s protected areas network, it is also part of the Zone of Special Protection of its Natural Values.

Festa da Ostra and regional specialities

The Festa da Ostra takes place on the first weekend of April in the park by Arcade’s quay. The first edition was held in 1987. Oysters are served raw with lemon. The Arcade oyster belongs to the species Ostrea edulis; its flavour is associated with the waters at the mouth of the Río Verdugo. At the festival, you can also sample mussels farmed along the shores of the Ría de Vigo. If the Festa da Ostra determines the dates of your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

Beaches and walking routes in Arcade

The Arcade-Xunqueiras circular route runs through Arcade along the sea and the Río Verdugo, passing beaches within the Enseada de San Simón Special Area of Conservation. At Xunqueira de Arcade, there is a river beach with showers, stone tables, a beach volleyball court, a children’s playground, shade trees and parking. The beach bar is open seasonally in summer. Praia de Matilde is an official recreational area in the parish of Arcade. The area’s attractions therefore include both riverside and coastal destinations, which do not have to be combined into a single route.

The Paseo Marítimo also offers its own perspective on the meeting of river and Ría. The Peirao de Arcade is on the Camino Portugués de la Costa; Praia de Matilde is connected to the Camino Portugués. Clube Náutico de Arcade is next to O Peirao beach and has direct access to the fishing and sports quay. These landmarks appeal to different interests: the coastal and river landscape, a beach area or the harbour.

Culture and getting there

The route through Arcade also includes cultural stops. Fonte A Lavandeira is a traditional Galician complex comprising a spring and a washhouse. The A Mariscadora monument is a work by Carlos Tesouro and is connected with the tradition of women shellfish gatherers. Separately, the parish church of Santiago de Arcade is part of Soutomaior’s significant cultural heritage.

You can reach the Área de Arcade from the N-550 via the exit towards Arcade harbour. As a municipal site, the Área includes a beach area, a play area, a park and a promenade. These details provide concrete reference points when choosing where to stay in Arcade based on your preferred focus.
