For travelers who want to discover Pidre through its culture and connections to the pilgrimage route, two buildings and a route offer different points of interest. Santa María de Pidre is connected with the Camino Francés; the Ponte de A Mercede is also associated with it. There is also the route to Balneario de Frádegas, which crosses Ponte Mercede and then follows the Ulla toward Santa Mariña. You can therefore plan your stay around Romanesque architecture, medieval infrastructure, or a route to explore on foot or by bike.

Santa María de Pidre and its west portal

The church of Santa María de Pidre is located in Pidre and was built toward the end of the 12th century. It is connected with the Camino Francés. The west portal is almost the only Romanesque element of the church to have been preserved unchanged. It has two archivolts, with a chambran surrounding the larger of the two. Archivolts are the arch-shaped elements that frame a portal, while the chambran encloses the larger arch on the outside. This makes it possible to describe the Romanesque design through specific architectural features: in addition to the period in which it was built, the surviving forms provide another point of reference for understanding the church. If you are interested in architecture, at Santa María you can consider both its historical period and the design of its west portal.

Romanesque chapel and World Heritage connection

The Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Pidre is also Romanesque. It is one of the heritage features outside the BIC area associated with the 1993 World Heritage declaration for the Way of St. James. The year refers to the declaration, not to the chapel's construction date. The two religious buildings can therefore be considered from different perspectives: at Santa María, its construction toward the end of the 12th century and its west portal are defining features; for the chapel, the focus is on its Romanesque classification and its connection to the 1993 declaration. This distinction helps avoid confusing building history with the World Heritage connection.

The Ponte de A Mercede on the Ulla

The Ponte de A Mercede is located in Pidre, at the place known as A Ponte Mercé. The medieval bridge crosses the Ulla River between Palas de Rei and Antas de Ulla and is also connected with the Camino Francés. It thus complements the religious architecture with a different aspect: the church's defining features concern its period of construction and portal, while those of the bridge concern the river crossing and its location between the two towns. For a cultural perspective on Pidre, these offer two different ways of looking at buildings, each connected with the Camino Francés.

On foot or by bike to Balneario de Frádegas

The route to Balneario de Frádegas can be traveled on foot, by mountain bike, or by touring bike. It crosses Ponte Mercede and then follows the course of the Ulla toward Santa Mariña. This specifies both several ways to travel and a sequence of specific waypoints: first Ponte Mercede, then the Ulla toward Santa Mariña. The different modes of travel apply to the same route; its described course provides a reference point along the river. If you want to include buildings and a route in your travel plans, you can choose between focusing on architecture and heritage or taking a tour on foot or by bike.
