Paderne: English Way, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Paderne
For your trip to Paderne, trails, cultural sites and local traditions offer tangible points of interest. The English Way crosses the municipality and forms part of the 11 km Miño–Betanzos section. It begins at Ponte do Porco and passes the mouth of the Lambre River and A Alameda beach. This gives you different themes to plan around: a section of the Way of St. James, a circular hike, or historic sites and customs.
Compare trails: route section and circular trail
The distances help distinguish between two hiking options: the Miño–Betanzos section is 11 km long; the Ruta de Zarzo a Chelo is a 10.5 km circular trail. It takes about three hours and is of moderate difficulty. The starting point is at Central do Zarzo in the parish of San Xulián de Vigo in Paderne. The routes therefore differ not only by half a kilometre, but also in their format: one is a route section, the other a loop. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Fishing on the Mandeo
O Coto de Chelo is an 11 km fishing stretch on the Mandeo River. It runs from the mouth of the Mainzoso stream, on the border between Coirós and Paderne, to the village of Inferniño, on the border between Aranga and Irixoa. Salmon, sea trout and trout can be caught there. If you are considering this stretch for a fishing trip, check the applicable fishing regulations and seasonal conditions in advance.
Bridge, churches and heritage
Ponte de Lambre is in the parish of Viñas. Fernán Pérez de Andrade the Good commissioned it in the 14th century to improve connections between Pontedeume and Betanzos. Both the date and the reason for commissioning the bridge are therefore important to understanding its history.
Architectural style and period offer a useful way to compare the churches. Igrexa de San Xoán de Paderne is a Baroque church in the centre of Paderne. Igrexa de San Pantaleón das Viñas is Romanesque, dates from the 12th century and is in Montecelo, in the parish of San Pantaleón das Viñas. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two styles and locations: Baroque in the centre of Paderne and Romanesque in Montecelo.
Sartego de Santiago de Adragonte is an archaeological landmark. The anthropomorphic tomb is behind the parish church of Santiago de Adragonte and dates from before the 13th century. Its rounded shape and simple decoration on the lid make it an unusual and important piece of Galician heritage. Here, the focus is on the tomb's shape and lid decoration, rather than the architectural style of a church.
Traditions and a visit to Orballo
The traditional Entroido de Samede complements the historic sites with a local custom. The 2026 edition featured the Bonitos and Vixigueiros characters, as well as a procession around the hamlet as part of the carnival. The year reference helps distinguish this particular edition from the cultural sites that are there all year round.
At Orballo in Donín (Paderne), a guided tour of the company's organic growing areas lasting a little over an hour and a half is planned for 2026. During the tour, visitors learn about growing aromatic plants and tea and can sample products. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, check available dates in advance.
