Mugardos offers a variety of ways to experience the area: trails, coastline, historic buildings and a distinctive food culture. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Mugardos, you can start by choosing based on the themes that interest you. These include the walking and cycling path along the AC-130, local traditions and Mugardos-style octopus.

Trails and excursions

The walking and cycling path along the AC-130 between Ares and Mugardos runs through the municipality of Mugardos. Mugardos is also on the English Way to Santiago de Compostela. One route in the “Coñece Mugardos” programme passed through the town and began at the town hall. The walking routes in this programme were of moderate difficulty and took approximately three hours. This brings several kinds of routes into focus: the walking and cycling path along the AC-130, the pilgrimage route to Santiago and the routes in the municipal walking programme.

History and buildings

Castillo de la Palma is a defensive structure with a history spanning more than 400 years. The Roman villa of Noville is located in the O Seixo area of the municipality of Mugardos and was excavated in the late 1980s. The Church of San Vicente de Mehá was built in the 19th century on the remains of a 16th-century chapel. According to local tradition, the present-day San Vitorio chapel in Franza replaced an older chapel that stood above Castro de San Victorio. The area’s local architectural and cultural history thus stretches from Roman remains and a defensive structure to churches built on the sites of older chapels.

Coast and practical information

Bestarruza Beach can be reached via the seafront promenade or by taking the steps from Parque del Campo de la Catedral. On 15 June 2026, the municipality launched a lifeguard service there at the start of the summer season. If the lifeguard service is important for your plans, check its current status in advance. The Mugardos–Ferrol boat landing is one of the town’s key visitor spots. If you’re planning a trip, check the timetable before you travel.

The Voto de Chanteiro is a deeply rooted Mugardos tradition and part of the municipality’s cultural and folk heritage. The Festa do Polbo is a food festival held on the Mugardos seafront as part of the Festas do Carme. At the Festa do Polbo, Mugardos-style octopus is prepared with a sauce made from onions, green peppers and red peppers. If you want to plan your visit around the festival, check the dates before you travel.
