In Ferrol, maritime history, a historically shaped cityscape, artistic initiatives and coastal routes come together as distinct travel themes. Highlights range from collections and architectural history to local cuisine, festival traditions and the Camino Inglés. You can tailor your trip according to whether you are especially interested in naval history, architecture, art or outdoor activities.

Maritime History and Architecture

The Museo Naval is housed in an 18th-century building designed by the architect Sánchez Bort, which formerly served as a barracks for prisoners. The museum’s permanent exhibits include historical ship models, diving suits and ship flags, as well as materials on navigation and cartography, and weapons. The collection thus covers different aspects of seafaring, from ships and equipment to navigation and cartography.

Ferrol Arsenal is another landmark that reflects the city’s maritime history. Built in the 18th century, the complex comprises hydraulic works and buildings and is described as unique in Europe. The Museo de la Construcción Naval, also known as Exponav, is housed in an 18th-century industrial hall in the Herrerías building. Visitors interested in the architectural side of naval history will find a different focus here than in the Museo Naval collection.

Cityscape, Art and Local Cuisine

The Barrio da Magdalena is considered an ensemble of historical and artistic interest and a landmark of the city. Its cityscape is shaped by 18th-century geometric-rationalist urban planning. The neighbourhood is also considered Ferrol’s main culinary district, particularly around María and Sol streets. Calle Sol has numerous establishments serving tapas and predominantly seafood-based local cuisine. Architecture and food culture offer two distinct ways to experience the neighbourhood.

Las Meninas de Canido adds another artistic dimension. The project began in 2008 as an artistic and socially engaged initiative by local painter Eduardo Hermida. National and international artists from the fields of painting, graffiti and mural art take part in the event. This sets the initiative apart from the historical urban planning of the Barrio da Magdalena: its focus is an artistic project and various forms of painting.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Camino Inglés

The recommended route through Ferrol’s urban heritage can be completed on foot in a morning. Hiking and cycling are also possible along the Ferrol coast. These offer different options: a route through the city’s urban heritage that takes a set amount of time, and activities along the coast. The Camino Inglés also begins in Ferrol, then passes through towns such as Narón, Neda, Fene, Cabanas, Pontedeume and Santiago de Compostela.

Castelo de San Felipe offers another way to explore the city’s architectural heritage. It is one of the most representative examples of the large 18th-century bastioned batteries. The castle offers excellent views over the estuary. Its architecture and views give a visit here a different emphasis from the museums or Magdalena’s planned cityscape.

Collections and Festival Traditions

At the Museo de Historia Natural, the skeleton of a fin whale shows the size of an individual animal: it is 18 metres long. The collection also includes a giant squid and rare shark species preserved in liquid. The natural history collection complements the maritime history with actual animal specimens, while the Museo Naval displays ship models, equipment, flags and navigation materials.

The events calendar also has its own cultural highlights. During the Noche de las Pepitas, on the evening of 18 March, uniformed singing and instrumental groups known as rondallas parade through the streets of Ferrol, singing to the women of the city. The Fiesta de las Pepitas has a history spanning more than 180 years. Holy Week in Ferrol is recognised as a festival of international tourist interest; its dates follow the religious calendar.
