Coucieiro: Route, River Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Coucieiro
In Coucieiro, you can shape your trip around different themes: a named route, the natural pools of the Río Castro, or religious buildings and local traditions. The place names lead to specific stops and historical dates. When planning, you can first decide whether you would most like to explore the river landscape, the history of the chapels and church, or cultural customs.
River Landscape and Route
The Ruta Caldeiras do Castro – Coucieiro begins and ends at the Caldeiras do Castro. To reach the Caldeiras do Río Castro, the directions provided take you along the AC-440 from Muxía towards Fisterra. After Moraime, follow the signs for Vilarmide and Couceiro. After approximately 12.5 kilometres, you will reach the turn-off for the Área recreativa do Castro. Park there and walk a short distance further. The distance is approximate; road conditions and signs may change, so it is advisable to check the directions before setting out.
At the Caldeiras do Río Castro, river erosion has formed small natural pools. The Río Castro also drops eight metres there. These details describe two different aspects of the landscape: the pools formed by erosion and the river’s change in elevation. The Caldeiras are in the parish of San Pedro de Coucieiro and are associated with the Camiño de Fisterra-Muxía pilgrimage route. If you are interested in river landscapes or pilgrimage routes, these features provide a specific reason to include both the natural features and the route connection in your travel plans.
Churches and Chapels in Coucieiro
The religious buildings also offer different historical points of interest. The Iglesia parroquial de San Pedro de Coucieiro is a Baroque building from the first half of the 18th century. The Capilla de Santa Marina was founded in 1670 by the Benedictine monks of Moraime and now belongs to the parish of San Pedro de Coucieiro. A different founding story is recorded at the Capilla del Santo Outel de O Castro: Don Juan de Cantorna founded it in 1660. If you are focusing on culture, you can distinguish between a Baroque church and two chapels, each with its own recorded founding date.
Another chapel, San Miguel de Coucieiro, is also located in the parish of San Pedro de Coucieiro. In chronological terms, the Capilla del Santo Outel de O Castro was founded in 1660, and the Capilla de Santa Marina ten years later; the parish church dates from the first half of the 18th century. This timeline helps place the named buildings in their different historical contexts without conflating their individual stories.
Traditions and Festival Dates
The tradition of the Danza de Arcos is preserved in the parish of Coucieiro. In July 2025, it was reported that it was performed at that year’s celebration. The Danza de Arcos is therefore a distinct cultural point of interest alongside the churches and chapels: it is not about architectural history, but about a tradition preserved in the parish.
The traditional Festas in honour of the Virxe do Socorro were also announced for 5 and 6 July 2025 in the parish of Coucieiro, in the municipality of Muxía. These dates refer to the 2025 edition and do not indicate a later festival date. If you would like to plan your trip around a Festa, check the dates for the relevant year. This keeps your plans focused on a specific occasion without treating past dates as a future programme.
