Discover Losar De La Vera
Accommodation in Losar De La Vera
Losar de la Vera offers natural attractions, buildings and events with different focuses. There are also festivals held at various times throughout the year. When planning, it is therefore important to consider both the activity you want to enjoy and the season and specific event date.
Bridge, Water and Trails
Puente de Cuartos is a 15th-century granite bridge with two arch openings. It is located about two kilometres from the centre of Losar de la Vera. Beneath the medieval bridge are natural pools in the Garganta de Cuartos, which are used for swimming in summer. Swimming conditions may vary seasonally. In addition to the natural bathing area, there is a roadside pull-off at the Garganta de Cuartos where vehicles can be parked.
The Ruta del Puente de Cuartos is a 5.6-kilometre circular trail of low difficulty. You can follow the route on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike; it is recommended year-round. The different ways of getting around offer a practical basis for planning. Check trail conditions locally before setting out, especially after weather events.
Piscina Natural El Vadillo is located at the Garganta Vadillo. It has a restaurant-bar, a bathing area for children and a car park. The facilities may operate seasonally, so you should check that they are open before travelling. Also at the Garganta Vadillo, a canyoning descent takes two and a half hours; the longest abseil is 30 metres. Canyoning is a technical activity that requires suitable equipment and appropriate conditions.
Nature and Local History
The Tejos de Escobarejo are listed as a protected stand of notable yew trees in Losar de la Vera. They are Extremadura’s third most significant yew population. Refugio del Brezo is a mountain refuge at an altitude of 1,400 metres, accessible from Losar de la Vera via a forest track. Weather, track conditions and forestry restrictions may affect access; check these conditions before setting off.
Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago ApĂłstol has largely retained its original structure and is known for its architectural value. Calle del Agua is an example of the vernacular architecture of Losar de la Vera; a water channel runs along its centre. Both sites offer insight into different aspects of the built heritage: the preserved structure of a church and a defining feature of a street.
Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del Paludismo presents a permanent exhibition on the history of malaria in Spain and the campaigns to eradicate it. The centre also features audiovisual displays and a reconstruction of a former malaria dispensary. Temporary exhibitions, along with spaces for workshops, courses and talks, round out the offering. Programmes and temporary exhibitions may change.
