Hiking routes, viewpoints, and Hurdan building and craft traditions take center stage in Casares de las Hurdes. The route descriptions range from about 3.5 kilometers to a 17-kilometer route that also includes a section by car.

Hiking Routes and Ways to Get Around

A route of about 3.5 kilometers leads from Casares de las Hurdes to the Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía Hurdana in La Huetre. The eight-kilometer Majá Robledo route also begins in Casares and heads toward Carabusino. The two route descriptions therefore differ not only in destination, but also significantly in length.

The Ruta de los Olivares begins about 500 meters from Casares de las Hurdes, on the road toward Caminomorisco. This distance refers to the starting point, not the length of the route. It follows forest tracks, paths, roads, and firebreaks, and is considered suitable for vehicles. Traveling by car or bicycle is possible.

The Ruta de los Lobos begins in Casares and heads toward the Majá Robledo reservoir. It is 17 kilometers long and ends in El Gasco. It includes a section by car; the rest of the route is covered on foot. The stated length therefore does not refer to a walking-only route. The PR-CC 212 Senda de Alfonso XIII is also one of the hiking routes starting in Casares. For driving, the Carretera Provincial Paisajística: Las Hurdes Altas is a driving route from Casares de las Hurdes.

Viewpoints and Landscape

La Pregonera lies at an altitude of about 1,500 meters. When visibility is good, the view extends over the valley of the Río Hurdano, the Sierra de Francia in the province of Salamanca, and the Sierra de Malcata in Portugal. Other landscape features include the Sierra de la Corredera, the Chorro del Ceño, the rocky landscape of Casares de las Hurdes, and the meanders of the Río Hurdano.

From the Majá Robledo area, you can reach a water-supply reservoir near the source of the Río Hurdano. The Cascada del Ceño can be seen from a viewpoint three kilometers from this reservoir. The Mirador de las Estrellas is next to the turnoff from the road to the Majá Robledo track and is suitable for stargazing at night.

Crafts, Architecture, and Historical Motifs

La Huetre belongs to the municipality of Casares de las Hurdes. It is home to the Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía Hurdana. The route from Casares to this destination is about 3.5 kilometers long. The Centro showcases stone houses, embroidery, musical instruments, and other local crafts; individual exhibits may change. If you are planning a visit, check the latest visitor information beforehand.

The Campanario de Casares de Las Hurdes is a striking example of traditional Hurdan architecture. Built of stone and slate, it stands apart from the church, which was built later. Another heritage site, the Cementerio de piedra, features rock-art motifs in the form of ladders, stars, and radiating and concentric circles. These motifs are considered characteristic of artistic periods in the late Iron Age and of pre-Christian eras.

Carabusino preserves the Calleja de los Borrachos, an alley that is particularly representative of local vernacular architecture. In La Huetre, traditional narrow streets shape the village landscape. In Robledo, the old part of the hamlet and its terraced orchards are worth seeing.
