If you are interested in local history, public art, and regional culture, Valdencín offers several points of interest. The town is a stop on the Pueblos-de-Luz Valle del Alagón route. The Pueblos de Luz tourism initiative shares the history, heritage, surroundings, and typical products of Extremadura’s colonization villages. These themes can help guide your hotel search and give your trip a focus: you can decide whether you would like to discover Valdencín primarily through its history, its murals, or its place in regional culture.

Route, Art, and Local History

Seven tourist routes were created in the Valle del Alagón as part of the initiative, based on geographical criteria and taking into account natural, landscape, and cultural resources alongside heritage. The proposed Pueblos-de-Luz route takes a detour to Valdencín to see two murals. This connects the local art with a regional route that brings together different themes.

The town’s origins can be placed in historical context: Valdencín was planned in 1964 and founded between 1965 and 1970 by the former Instituto Nacional de Colonización. Its urban layout is another point of reference, as it is arranged around a square.

Church and Murals

The Iglesia de Santa Teresa dates from the 20th century. Its rectangular floor plan includes a nave, and the church is defined by its bell tower.

The “Muro Crítico” mural has been on the façade of the town hall since 2021. The Madrid artist Digo Diego created it as part of the Diputación de Cáceres’ “Muro crítico” municipal art campaign. A second mural is located at the base of the church tower. It commemorates the work of the first female settlers and is by the artist Jonathan Carranza, known as “Sojo.” The two works have different emphases: one is part of a municipal art campaign, while the other focuses on remembering the first female settlers.

Landscape and Cultural Program

Valdencín lies a short distance from the main canal, on the left bank of the Alagón River. In the Valle del Alagón, it is one of the whitewashed colonization settlements that stand out against a green setting.

Espacio Utopía is a multipurpose hall in Valdencín, with live music a central feature of its cultural program at various events. If you would like to include a particular event in your travel plans, it is worth checking the relevant program. Festival programs also offer a glimpse into local culture, but they apply to specific editions.

The 2025 edition of La Velá de Valdencín included competitions for migas, tortillas, and Pitarra wines. Dates and programs can vary from one edition to the next, so check the details for the relevant festival edition if they are important to your trip. A Mass and a subsequent procession were scheduled for October 15, 2024, for the festival in honor of Santa Teresa. A social gathering with charanga music and bouncy castles for children was also planned at Valdencín’s multipurpose hall. These examples bring together religious celebration and community activities without specifying a date for a future edition.

The different themes have clear points of focus: the route leads to two murals, the Iglesia de Santa Teresa is notable for its floor plan and bell tower, and the information about the town’s planning and founding relates to its settlement history. You can shape your stay according to whether you are especially interested in art, church architecture, or the origins of the town.
