Cardet: Romanesque Architecture, Views and Trails
Accommodation in Cardet
Cardet stands out for two main features: the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Cardet and trails with views of the Vall de Boí landscape. Both offer different starting points for planning a trip. The church brings together a long building history and distinctive architectural details; viewpoints and routes draw your gaze across the valley and point to specific destinations. This means you can decide in advance whether your stay will focus more on the building, the landscape or a hike.
Santa Maria de Cardet: a Romanesque church with distinctive details
Santa Maria de Cardet dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and is the smallest church in the Vall de Boí. Its small crypt is the only one in the valley’s Romanesque church ensemble. The bell tower also differs from the conventional form of a church tower: the church has an espadaña, a bell gable whose form dates back to Baroque alterations to the building. This makes it possible to consider Santa Maria de Cardet both in the context of its Romanesque construction and in comparison with the valley’s other churches.
Another detail can be found on the door: a medieval wrought-iron latch with geometric decorations and an intricately crafted head at the end has been preserved there. The most recent restoration aimed to preserve the church interior as it was at the beginning of the 20th century. The latch, bell gable and restoration goal offer different insights into the building’s history, without reducing its details to a single period.
Views of Cardet, the Salencar and the valley
Cardet offers panoramic views of the Cardet reservoir, the Salencar area, the valley and the peaks of the Vall de Boí. The Salencar de Barruera, also known as Pantà de Cardet, is nearby. The reservoir holds water from the Noguera de Tor and lies below Barruera, at the foot of the hill below Cardet.
From the Mirador de Santa Maria de Cardet, you can look out over the Barruera plain and the natural area of the Salencar. The viewpoint also passes beneath the imposing apse of Santa Maria de Cardet, one of the most impressive apses in the valley. At the Presa de Cardet by the reservoir, you can sit and enjoy the view. As conditions at the site may change, check local information before your visit.
Hiking trails with different routes
The Barruera–Cardet trail is 2.20 km long, has an elevation gain of 90 m and is listed as taking 50 minutes. After crossing the L-500, it runs along the mountainside and reaches the church of Santa Maria de Cardet directly. The distance, elevation gain and stated time provide specific guidance for this route; the described trail leads directly to the church.
The Ruta circular del Románico - 2 takes a different route: it passes directly below Santa Maria de Cardet and then runs along the southern edge of the village. When choosing between the two trails, you can therefore compare the stated time and elevation gain of the Barruera–Cardet route with the course of the circular trail. Both descriptions include the church, but they emphasize different aspects of the route.
Getting there and the short walk to the viewpoint
Cardet is reached from a turn-off on the L-500; from there, the road climbs uphill for about one kilometre. This approximate distance describes the climb from the turn-off. To reach the viewpoint, park at the entrance to the village and follow the signs behind the church; the walk is listed as taking three minutes. Check local information about access before your visit.
