Vilafreser – Town Centre, History and Aulina Grossa
Accommodation in Vilafreser
Vilafreser can be identified by its compact town centre, a distinctive holm oak and historic buildings. These local features lead to different topics: the landscape between two drainage basins, a route recorded in historical sources, and buildings with dated details. If you are looking for a destination with local history, you will find specific points of interest here rather than a single, uniform picture of the past.
Town Centre and Landscape
Sant SadurnĂ de Vilafreser defines the compact town centre. Vilafreser lies on a low ridge between the drainage basins of the Farga and the Cinyana. The settlement pattern and its position in the landscape are therefore important points of reference.
Another distinctive feature is the Aulina Grossa de la Casanova. The holm oak Quercus ilex ssp. ilex stands beside the Casanova farmhouse in Vilafreser. Its trunk circumference is 4.50 metres, its crown is up to 25 metres wide, and the tree is 17 metres tall.
Recorded Route and Dated Architectural Features
The route through the Coll de Vilafreser also has a historical connection. According to a document from 1017, a long-distance route known as the Strata Francigena or carretera de França ran through here.
At Can DivĂ, architectural features include a portal with wedge-shaped stones and four Gothic windows. Can Ramon, formerly known as Mas Puig, has a door lintel dated 1616. The lintels above two façade windows bear the date 1774.
There was also once a stone door lintel with a Hebrew inscription at Can Ramon. It is cited as evidence of the former existence of a Jewish settlement in this area. This is a historical interpretation of the lintel. Can Renart preserves another inscription: it is engraved in stone and dated 1570.
Can Grau is thought to have originally been built in the 16th century; it was extensively remodelled in the 18th century. Can Joanmiquel, in turn, was restored after being sold in 1971 and converted into a house museum.
The Tower and Layers of History
The Torre de Vilafreser is a medieval, almost square tower with four storeys, a height of 18 metres and loopholes. It is a seigneurial tower built in the 13th century, initially to protect the residence of the Vilafreser family.
Choosing a Destination
Sant Llorenç de Perles belongs to the parish of Vilafreser and lies just over one kilometre from Vilafreser as the crow flies. This describes the straight-line distance, not the distance by road. You can therefore choose from several distinct interests: the compact town centre and its setting, Aulina Grossa, or the different historical traces found in buildings and inscriptions. If you are looking for a hotel in Vilafreser, these topics can help you decide whether the area suits your interest in landscapes, nature or local history.
