Vilademuls is characterised by gently undulating terrain: hills and ridges alternate with broad valleys and small plains. Several routes pass through the medieval villages that make up Vilademuls and along paths lined with pine and holm oak trees. The landscape, rural history and historic buildings offer different points of interest when planning a stay in Vilademuls.

Rural history at the Museu Rural

The Museu Rural de Vilademuls houses more than 500 objects once used in rural life. It recreates an old farmhouse and uses its exhibits to tell the story of rural life and earlier generations. The museum thus offers a different perspective from the architectural heritage: its objects bring rural everyday history to life, while the gateway, church and castle highlight architectural history and former rule.

Castle, fortifications and church

Vilademuls Castle was built in the 11th century. It was a territorial castle with jurisdiction over all the villages in the Barony of Vilademuls. The village was surrounded by a wall; what remains includes a monumental gateway with a round arch built of wedge-shaped stones, dating from the 13th century, as well as part of the base of the wall. The castle and fortifications thus point to different aspects of the town’s history: former rule and the architectural remains of the walled settlement.

The façade of the Church of Sant Joan Baptista features a Gothic entrance portal. An inscription records the rebuilding of the church in 1560. The church also contains the ossuary of Saurina de Cervelló, with the coats of arms of Vilademuls and Rocabertí and an inscription dated 1307. The two dates refer to different records: 1307 appears in the ossuary inscription, while 1560 appears in the inscription about the rebuilding at the portal. In a field near Can Guapanoia stands a preserved 18th-century oratory. It consists of two large sections and is topped by a cross.

Routes and landscape

The routes pass through the municipality’s medieval villages and along paths lined with pine and holm oak trees. The villages and the tree-lined stretches of path are distinct features of the landscape. Whether you choose Vilademuls for its historic buildings or its rural surroundings, these highlights offer different perspectives on the same place.

Festivals and local traditions

The Aplec de Sant Mer in Vilademuls features Sardanas performed by the Cobla Principal de Banyoles and a traditional crafts fair. A traditional festival also includes a communal Arrossada popular, attended by local residents and their relatives. Another tradition is an annual ceremony with a procession: visitors come to the church and take part in the procession. The dates follow the Corpus calendar; the celebration is not described here in more detail as a Corpus procession.

If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the current dates in advance. The arrangements for the Arrossada may also change. This helps distinguish the traditions described here from the enduring themes of a trip: the museum and buildings represent rural history and heritage, while festivals offer specific occasions throughout the year.
