You can get to know Sant Miquel De Fluvià through specific local landmarks: the church of the Monestir, the Forn Romà, La font i el rentador and the Fluvià River. Also included are Ruta 170 and the Fira Oficis. The topics range from architectural history and archaeological traces to water management, river ecology and recurring activities.

The church and history of the Monestir

The church of the Monestir de Sant Miquel de Fluvià was consecrated in 1066. Its layout is basilical and includes a short transept and a group of three apses. The information about the consecration and the architectural form complements itself: the year places the church in its historical context, while the transept and apses describe its spatial layout.

Archaeological and restoration work is also part of the Monestir’s history. The moat, the course of the cloister and the former abbot’s palace were enhanced and made visible. This extends the view beyond the church building to include other elements of the complex, including the course of the cloister and the former function of the abbot’s palace.

The Forn Romà and its construction

The Forn Romà de Sant Miquel de Fluvià was discovered in 1974 during roadworks. It is a vertical, single-chamber kiln with a square ground plan. A pillar in the centre supports the grate. This describes both its external form and a key component inside: the central pillar supports the grate within the kiln’s single chamber. Following restoration, the kiln is in good condition and protected by a solid masonry structure.

The spring, washhouse and water management

At La font i el rentador, historic water management meets architectural design. The spring’s surplus water was first channelled into a public livestock trough and then to the village washhouse. The latter was rebuilt during the Second Republic. The order in which the water was channelled shows how the spring served two different facilities: first the livestock trough, then the washhouse.

At the end of the 19th century, La font i el rentador was protected by a stone shelter. A rectangular platform was built in front of it, with benches along the sides. The spring is reached by a staircase with numerous steps. Several specific features can help you find your way: the shelter, platform and benches describe the design, while the staircase marks the route to the spring.

River landscape and circular walk

The Fluvià River is an ecological corridor connecting the volcanic area of La Garrotxa with the coastal region. Its vertebrate fauna includes the Mediterranean barbel and the otter. The river landscape therefore represents both a connection between different natural areas and the wildlife found in the river.

Ruta 170 is a fairly level circular walking route. It starts in Sant Miquel De Fluvià and passes through the districts of Palau and Santa Eulàlia. The route description, published in 2025, is based on an earlier walk; check the route before setting out. The starting point, circular layout and districts along the way give you the key details for planning, but do not indicate how long the walk takes.

Fira Oficis and visits

Since 2023, Fira Oficis has been held on the first Sunday in June. It features demonstrations of traditional crafts as well as stalls selling handicrafts and food products. The programme may vary from year to year. Check the date and details of the event for the year of your visit.

Two types of visits are also offered in Sant Miquel De Fluvià, and both are open to all visitor groups. Scheduling varies by season. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth checking the specific date of the visit you want to take. This helps distinguish between seasonal visits and the annually scheduled Fira Oficis: the former follow a changing schedule, while the latter has been held on the first Sunday in June since 2023.
