Palamós brings together coastal landscapes, a long fishing tradition and historic sites. Its varied themes give you different ways to decide what you would like to discover during your stay: archaeological remains, the development of fishing, or paths and coves by the sea.

Historic Sites in Palamós

The Poblat ibèric de Castell was a fortified Iberian settlement. Founded in the 6th century BC, its economy developed through trade with Empúries. These early trading connections are part of the site’s history, as is its fortified layout.

Castell de Sant Esteve was built over a Roman villa and was first mentioned in 1063. It stands on a sea-facing cliff between La Fosca beach and Cala S’Alguer cove. The site offers a chance to consider both older layers of construction and its particular coastal setting.

Cala S’Alguer is a traditional fishing settlement in the municipality of Palamós, in Baix Empordà. It lies between La Fosca and Platja Castell beach, near the former Castell de Sant Esteve de Mar. The Nucli antic de Sant Joan tells a different story of local community life: the old town grew from farmhouses and artisans’ homes around the square and church.

Fishing and Maritime Life

The Museu de la Pesca focuses on the past, present and future of fishing on the Costa Brava. A permanent exhibition covers these themes, alongside activities related to maritime and fishing life. The Barques del Peix complement the museum as a floating museum, with boats open to visitors.

At the Espai del Peix, sessions are offered on identifying, preparing and cooking fish. The programme also includes courses, show cooking events, workshops and tastings of traditional fish dishes. If you are interested in a particular activity, check the current programme in advance, as dates may change.

The Museu de la Pesca also offers visits where you can learn how the fish auction works and observe it at the Palamós fish market. The museum also organises regular guided visits to Castell de Sant Esteve. Dates for both offerings may change, so checking visiting times will help with your planning.

Coastal Paths and Landscape

The Camí de Ronda starts at Platja Gran, climbs towards Pedró, follows the coast eastwards and continues towards Cap Roig. This sequence describes the route and helps you understand its direction along the coast, without implying a walking time or level of difficulty for any particular section.

The Espai Natural Castell-Cap Roig is a 1,100-hectare Mediterranean woodland area on the coast. It extends across Palamós, Calella de Palafrugell and Mont-ras. The coastal features in Palamós include sandy beaches, rocky coves and mixed coves, which are easy to reach on foot and by vehicle. Local conditions may vary, so check the situation at the specific cove you have chosen before visiting the beach.

Cap Gros is a 74-metre-high headland that drops steeply towards the sea. From there, views extend to the Illes Formigues, Castell and La Fosca. Its height and the named viewpoints give this coastal spot a different character from the beaches and coves: the focus here is on views over the sea and the surrounding coast.

When planning your trip, you can choose from different areas of interest: historic sites, fishing culture or coastal landscapes. If visits or particular activities are important to your stay, take their respective dates into account and check local conditions for your planned visit.
