Campdevànol Between Waterways and Heritage
Accommodation in Campdevànol
Campdevànol brings together riverside paths, churches, mills, architecture, and festival traditions. You can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on viewpoints and river paths or on historic buildings and local culture. Both sides of the town offer specific points of interest to help you plan.
Riverside paths and viewpoints
The route to Torrent de la Cabana follows the Estiula stream, also known as Torrent de la Cabana or Ruta dels 7 Gorgs. The Ruta dels 7 Gorgs leads to seven named pools: Gorg de la Cabana, Gorg de la Tosca, Gorg de l’Olla, Gorg de la Bauma, Gorg del forat, Gorg petit del Colomer, and Gorg gran del Colomer. If you choose this route, keep the names in mind as a guide to the individual stops.
A day pass per person must be booked in advance to access Torrent de la Cabana. Check the seasonal requirements before your trip. For August 2026, access was planned from the Font del Querol information point because the route via Camí Ral was impassable at the time. Check the current access route before your visit.
The Camí ral ramader starts in Campdevànol and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Another itinerary leads to natural viewpoints over the Freser Valley and connects four churches in Campdevànol. There are several route themes to choose from: a route featuring the named pools, a path with viewpoints and churches, and the Camí ral ramader.
A riverside walk starts at Plaça de la Dansa and follows the Freser downstream to Font del Tòtil. There you’ll find a large covered area and a children’s playground with a lawn. This route description links a specific starting point and riverside destination with the facilities at Font del Tòtil.
Churches, a mill, and architecture
Molí Gros, also known as Molí de Baix de Campdevànol, is a grain mill dating from the mid-17th century. It was powered by water and had a vertical waterwheel. Hospital de Campdevànol is a Modernist building by Joan Rubió i Bellver, a student of Gaudí, and is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
The Church of Sant Llorenç has been recorded in the parish register of the Diocese of Vic since 1075. Only the bell tower and sections of the walls remain from the original Romanesque church. Sant Pere d’Aüira has been known since 1150; the church was rebuilt in the early 13th century and consecrated on June 6, 1235, by Bishop Bernat Calvó of Vic. The two churches therefore represent different recorded periods in the town’s history.
The Church of Sant Cristòfol dates from 1718 and was recently restored. Xalet Fossas is another Modernist building and is also included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. If you’re focusing on cultural history, you can combine these buildings with the history of the mill and the older ecclesiastical connections.
La Gala, Sardana, and art
La Gala refers to traditional ceremonial dances and is the main event of the Festa Major del Roser. It is danced on the third Sunday in September. On July 29, 2014, La Gala was recognized as an “Element Festiu Patrimonial d’Interès Nacional” (National Heritage Festive Element). Check the program for the relevant edition for your travel dates.
The Festa de la Sardana also has a regular place in the annual calendar: it has been celebrated in Campdevànol for more than 50 years and takes place on May 1. The Coll Bardolet Art Gallery has a collection of 200 works that reflects the entire artistic career of the painter, who was born in Campdevànol. Dance and painting thus complement the town’s architectural history with living and artistic traditions.
For families, the “El agua, el hierro y el oro” rally is another named activity. The first riddle begins at Centre PYRFER in Molí Gros, Carrer Major 9B, 17530 Campdevànol, Girona. Check in advance whether the QR panel is still available. Centre PYRFER is also the starting point for the ten-stop Ruta del Ferro i l’Aigua de Campdevànol.
