Alp: Skiing and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alp
Discover Alp from several perspectives: La Molina and Masella are known for winter sports, while the church, castle, fountain complex and megalithic tomb reveal different aspects of its history. Are you particularly interested in skiing, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, traces of the Middle Ages or the landscape? The following places and themes offer practical guidance.
Romanesque church and Gothic painting
The Església de Sant Pere d’Alp is an 11th-century church and the only Romanesque building in the comarca with a three-aisled basilica floor plan. Its three aisles illustrate the layout and make the architectural form easy to understand. On the north wall of the presbytery is a 14th-century Gothic painting depicting Sant Cristòfol. The Romanesque building and Gothic painting thus bring together different periods in the same church.
Visiting hours are Sundays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; you can also contact the parish office by phone. Check with the parish office before your visit.
Castle, chapel and fountain complex
Torre de Riu is a castle with a romantic character, built in 1896 on the site of the old Torre del Riu, a 14th-century defensive bastion. The small Capella de la Divina Pastora is attached to the main building. This allows you to view the medieval defensive bastion, the later castle and the chapel as distinct elements of the complex.
The Font de la Mare de Déu de la Guia is located in Plaça de la Font in the old town. The architectural complex comprises an image of the Virgin Mary, a public washhouse and a livestock watering trough. These three components bring a religious image and practical infrastructure together in a single complex.
Traces from different periods
The Dolmen de Paborda is a megalithic tomb built approximately between 2000 and 1800 BC. Its date places it far back in prehistory—long before the 11th-century church and Torre de Riu in its form as a castle, dating from 1896.
The medieval Castell de Segramorta lies near La Molina; what remains are traces of opus spicatum, a herringbone-patterned masonry technique. Together with the dolmen and the later buildings, it forms a broad timeline, from prehistoric tombs to medieval and more recent architecture.
Skiing and landscape
La Molina and Masella are the ski resorts for winter sports in Alp. For a different view of the landscape, the summit panorama from La Tosa d’Alp stretches across the entire Cerdanya and a large part of Catalonia. The Sender 737 – Camà d’Alp a Set Fonts, by contrast, passes through sunny slopes and stretches of woodland. The perspectives described are therefore distinct: a sweeping panorama from the summit and a route shaped by its slopes and woodland.
When looking for a hotel in Alp, you can start by deciding what brings you there: skiing, architectural and local history, or the landscape. Then compare the details of specific hotel offers with the requirements that matter for your stay.
