Serinyà: Hiking, River Landscapes and Prehistory
Accommodation in Serinyà
Serinyà is in the north of the Pla de l’Estany comarca, right on the border with the Garrotxa comarca. The town lies in the lower reaches of the Ser, where it flows into the Fluvià. Experiences described here include circular walks through woodland and plains, a cycling route, horse riding and insights into prehistory. To plan your stay, you could first consider whether you want to focus mainly on landscapes, outdoor activities or culture.
Circular Trails with Different Highlights
The Conèixer Serinyà a peu project includes circular walks that start and finish in the town hall square. They are also suitable for occasional visitors. One of the routes described, Prop del nucli de Serinyà (fonts, glaç i coves), follows woodland paths and shaded areas to several springs, a well-preserved icehouse and a mill. It also takes in the remarkable Bora Gran d’en Carreres rock shelter, where remains from the Upper Palaeolithic were found. This route brings together landscape features and archaeological traces.
The Pla de Martís i Fluvià circular trail has a different focus: it includes riverside landscapes and birdwatching and runs near the confluence of the Ser and Fluvià and along the edge of the Fares Island Wildlife Reserve. The Sant Galderic circular trail focuses on flat woodland paths across the open Pla de Martís plain and panoramic views. These differences can help you choose: springs, an icehouse, a mill and an archaeological site define one route; riverside scenery and birdwatching define another; Sant Galderic describes a trail across the open plain.
A Cycling Route and a Horse Ride
Described as not very difficult, the BTT Ruta 10: Ruta de Serinyà i l’Estany de Banyoles starts at Casa dels Enginyers. It heads towards Serinyà, passing the Arqueoparc Coves de Serinyà, goes around Lake Banyoles and then climbs to the Pla de Martís. So it is not just a single stretch near Serinyà that is described, but a succession of different landscape features.
Rutes amb cavalls combines an introduction to riding in the riding arena with a subsequent horse ride. The activity is designed for riders of different experience levels, from beginners to advanced. Its format is therefore clearly different from the walking trails and the BTT route: the ride in the arena is followed by a horse ride, while the walking and cycling activities described focus on their respective routes and landscapes.
Prehistory and Church Architecture
The Parc de les Coves Prehistòriques de Serinyà features a permanent exhibition with a reconstruction of the daily life of the great hunters of the Upper Palaeolithic and reproductions of some of the remains found in the caves. According to a municipal notice available on 28 August 2026, the park was temporarily closed for renovation work. Check the latest status before your trip, as it may change. This way, you can consider the exhibition as a theme for your trip without overlooking the time-limited closure notice.
The Església parroquial de Sant Andreu also offers a tangible insight into architectural history. It was built from travertine blocks from Espolla and sandstone ashlar. The single-nave church has a pointed barrel vault and a semicircular apse covered by a quarter-dome vault. The materials, vault and apse describe different aspects of the building: both the origin of the stones used and the shape of the church interior. Together with the archaeological traces at Bora Gran d’en Carreres, they offer a glimpse of two different aspects of Serinyà’s history.
