Tagamanent brings together monumental heritage, the landscapes of Montseny and recurring festival traditions. The hilltop complex is classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) and lies in the western part of Montseny Natural Park. There are several ways to explore it during your stay: historic buildings, the path up to the hill, the history of rural everyday life and recurring festival days.

Heritage and history

The complex comprises the Church of Santa Maria, a cemetery, the ruins of the rectory, a square, the former town hall and the remains of an inn. Tagamanent Castle has been documented since 945. The monumental hilltop complex was burned down and abandoned in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Today's Church of Santa Maria de Tagamanent was rebuilt after the 1448 earthquake and extensively remodelled between 1578 and 1619. These dates mark different chapters: the castle's first written mention, the church's reconstruction in the 15th century and the complex's abandonment in the 20th century. Tagamanent's heritage also includes medieval churches and chapels.

Walking route and landscape

The path up to the hill starts at the El Bellver information point and follows a route between cultivated terraces to Coll de Sant MartĂ. The current access route is considered a walk open to everyone and offers panoramic views across the Congost Valley towards the Mediterranean. A large part of the municipality of Tagamanent lies within Montseny Natural Park, so its historic heritage is set amid diverse flora, fauna and landscapes.

A museum of rural history

Casa Museu L'AgustĂ, on the Pla de la Calma, is an ethnological museum that presents rural life in this part of Montseny in the mid-19th century. Its exhibits include stables for cows and sheep, the kitchen, the baking area, the dining room for special occasions and the bedrooms. An audiovisual presentation focuses on life in the farmhouse and on the Pla de la Calma. Unlike the hilltop complex, Casa Museu focuses on rural ways of life. Guided tours of Casa Museu L'AgustĂ are currently unavailable for technical reasons.

Festivals throughout the year

The Aplec de festa major de Tagamanent is celebrated on the second Sunday in September. The mass and poetry recital take place in the Church of Santa Maria de Tagamanent; afterwards, Mas l'AgustĂ hosts a discussion, a communal meal, a raffle and a concert with dancing. The traditional programme may vary from one edition to another. The second Sunday provides a recurring calendar date, while the activities may differ from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the Aplec, check the date and programme for the relevant edition in advance.
