Discover Rupit: culture, history and nature
Accommodation in Rupit
Rupit offers several points of interest for a stay: buildings with a documented history, the Pont Penjat, hiking trails with stated distances and regional products. The municipality of Rupit i Pruit is part of the protected Collsacabra natural area, whose landscape is characterised by rocky cliffs, dense forests, streams and waterfalls. You can therefore choose different focuses when planning your trip—from architectural history to a hike. Also check the specific visiting conditions for individual sites.
Architectural history around Rupit
The Pont Penjat was built in 1945 by local craftspeople: blacksmiths Francesc and Pere Rovira, mason Salvi Vila and foundry worker Joaquim Marsal. It crosses the Riera de Rupit, which surrounds the village in a deep gorge. Crossing the suspension bridge is an attraction in itself; its history and function go hand in hand here.
Castell de Rupit dates back to around the year 1000. On 22 April 1949, it was designated a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) and a historic monument. Today, the site is in ruins and cannot be visited. Check its visiting status again before your trip. This lets you appreciate Castell de Rupit in the context of the village’s history without planning an on-site visit.
The present-day Església de Sant Miquel also tells the story of a later building phase: construction began in 1729 and was apparently completed in 1734. The Ermita de Santa Magdalena dates from the 17th century and was built in the Baroque style; it was restored in 1973. These different dates provide a concrete framework for exploring Rupit’s architectural history.
Landscape and hiking trails
The municipality of Rupit i Pruit is part of the protected Collsacabra natural area. Its characteristic landscape features include rocky cliffs, dense forests, streams and waterfalls. The Riera de Rupit runs through the village before plunging more than 100 metres at Salt de Sallent, three kilometres from the village. Those interested in waterways will find this a different focus from exploring the historic buildings.
The lengths of the three named hiking trails can help you choose your route: Itinerari de les Fonts de Rupit is five kilometres long. Itinerari del Salt del Sallent and Itinerari de Santa Magdalena i mirador del Soler are each three kilometres long. Check the trail markings and conditions on the route before setting out.
Another viewpoint is the Campanar de Rupit. The climb rises almost 30 metres to the highest point of the parish church; from there, you can enjoy views of the village and its natural surroundings. As operating details may change, check before your visit whether the climb is currently available. The Campanar and the hiking trails offer different ways to experience the surroundings from different perspectives.
A self-guided tour and regional products
Descobreix Rupit is a self-guided tour. The accompanying brochure can be printed or collected from the tourist information office. If you would like to use the printed brochure, check the current options for obtaining it locally in advance.
Regional produce is also among the village’s offerings: shops in Rupit sell typical bread and coca, neules, cured meats, cheese and other locally made products. The selection may vary from shop to shop. In the area around Rupit, Mas El Torrent offers a themed farm visit with tastings of local products. If you plan to take part, check with them in advance for current dates.
Practical information
There is a large municipal car park at the entrance to Rupit i Pruit. It manages vehicle traffic and eases congestion on the narrow streets of the historic centre. The car park has four charging stations for electric vehicles. As parking regulations and charging infrastructure may change, check the current parking situation and availability of the charging stations before you arrive. This will help you plan your arrival and decide which of the buildings, trails or offerings described will shape your stay.
