Begues offers a range of hiking and cycling routes focused on culture, history or scenery. There is also an urban walking tour of representative buildings, a trail into Garraf Natural Park, and historic sites dating from prehistory to the Middle Ages. When planning a stay, you can choose to focus on outdoor activity, the townscape or cultural heritage. On the “La plana de Can Sadurní” health trail, you can also factor the route length, elevation change and approximate duration into your daily plans.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes in Begues

The urban walking tour visits distinctive buildings and structures that are representative of the municipality. Information panels with QR codes provide additional details along the route. The “Pel Parc del Garraf” trail leads from the La Clota plain into Garraf Natural Park. Almost 3,000 hectares of Begues’ municipal area lie within Parc del Garraf. This brings together a walk through the townscape and a trail into the natural park, set against the broader relationship between the municipality and the park.

The “La plana de Can Sadurní” health trail is 5.5 kilometres long, has an elevation change of 50 metres and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Heading west, it passes through woodland, cultivated land and vineyards; numerous dry-stone vineyard huts can be seen along the way. The duration, distance and elevation details provide a concrete guide for planning your day. The landscape features add a picture of the route to these figures.

Cultural Heritage from the Romanesque Period to Prehistory

Two historical classifications of the Església vella de Sant Cristòfol should be distinguished. Its first documented mention dates to 981; at the same time, the church appears to belong to the second Romanesque style or to the transitional style of the 12th and 13th centuries. The date and the stylistic classification answer different questions: 981 marks its first documented mention, while the centuries indicate its presumed stylistic period.

The Creu del Coll de Begues is considered the oldest dated cross in Catalonia. The Creu de Terme, meanwhile, is a copy of the Gothic original, which is dated to 1312. The year refers to the original, not the copy. The two crosses therefore represent different historical reference points: one is considered the oldest dated cross, while the other is linked to the date of a Gothic original.

The medieval Camí Ral from Barcelona to Vilafranca, also known as Via Mercadera, also passes through the municipality of Begues. Thus, alongside churches and crosses, a named medieval route forms part of the town’s historic landscape.

The Cova de Can Sadurní is notable for its prehistoric significance. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Catalonia and the eastern Mediterranean. It documents a stratigraphic sequence spanning 12,000 years to date, encompassing 10 major cultural periods and 34 specific episodes. This long time span offers a different perspective from the dating of individual buildings or the first documented mention of a church; at the same time, it is divided into numerous cultural periods and episodes.
