Discover Mongat: hotels between the beach and history
Accommodation in Mongat
Mongat combines an extensive coastline with several beaches, parks and historic sites. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mongat, you can plan your stay around what you’d most like to experience: the coast, water sports, walks or the town’s history. The beaches are close to RENFE stations and metro buses; accessible parking options also make getting there easier.
Beaches and coastal paths
Playa de les Roques is a small, welcoming town beach. The Maresme promenade begins here. Environmental activities take place at this beach on Sundays at the Jugoteca ambiental; check the weekly schedule before your visit. Playa de Can Tano adjoins Playa de les Barques. The latter was Montgat’s former fishing beach and is next to the Torre de Guaita.
Playa de les Barques provides access to the old town. A walk there takes you into the town centre, which has the character of a fishing village. At Playa de les Barques, you can take part in water sports through the Club MarĂtim and Escola de mar. The Surfindeed, Surfeja l'Ona sea and light sailing school is part of Club MarĂtim Montgat and is located at the entrance to the Maresme, 15 kilometres from Barcelona. Its range of nautical activities is open to all levels and age groups.
For walking and cycling, the Eix de la Costa connects the promenades of the coastal towns of the Maresme. Other routes have a different focus: the first stage of the Eix Central starts at Montgat station and heads inland via Tiana, TeiĂ , Alella, PremiĂ de Dalt and Vilassar de Dalt. Montgat and Vilassar de Mar are both recommended as starting points for the Baix Maresme route between them.
Parks and views
Parc del Turonet has viewpoints and a platform for cultural or festive events. Grassy areas invite you to relax and read, and there is also a fitness trail. On Turó del Mar stands the Templet mirador del Turó del Mar, on the hilltop in Parc del Turonet. From there, you can look out over the beach, the Maresme and the northern Barcelonès.
Parc de les Bateries offers panoramic views of the coastlines of the Barcelonès and the Maresme, the coastal mountain range and the surrounding area. Remains of the cannons from former military batteries can be seen on its esplanade. Parc del Tramvia has sports facilities and a fenced play area for young children. The park is also suitable for walking, cycling, running, playing sports and relaxing on the grass; it is suitable for all age groups.
History and culture
The northern portal of the Túnel ferroviari del Turó de Montgat is considered the northern portal of the first tunnel in the country. The tunnel was inaugurated on 28 October 1848 for passengers travelling between Barcelona and Mataró. It was part of the first railway line built in the country. Torre de Ca l'Alsina was originally attached to the west façade of the now-vanished farmhouse, Ca n'Alsina. It is located on Passeig de Mar, near the country’s first railway tunnel, the railway line and the beach.
The Església parroquial de Sant Joan Baptista also brings together different periods: construction began in 1816, while devotion to the saint dates back to around the 15th century. On Plaça de les Mallorquines stands “Mediterrà nia”, a public contemporary sculpture created by painter and sculptor Àlvar Suñol i Muñoz Ramos. The Ruta de la Guerra Civil de Montgat leads to historic architectural features from the wartime period, including machine-gun nests, bunkers and the Bateria de Costa.
Festivals and fishing tradition
The traditional Carnaval is celebrated every year in Parc del Tramvia; you can find the dates in the municipal agenda. The Festa Major de Sant Joan marks the start of the summer festivities. It is held around 24 June in the Sant Joan neighbourhood and the Casc Antic. Check the annual programme before your trip.
The local fishing tradition includes the sung fish auction, considered the only traditional auction still held along the entire Catalan coast. At the Llotja del Peix, you can view and buy fresh fish on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. Its listed location is Passeig MarĂtim, opposite the Casc Antic; temporarily, the fish market is at Plaça Sant Joan. As this change of location is temporary, it’s worth checking the details before your visit.
Getting there and finding your way around
Mongat is served by RENFE line R1, which runs between Molins de Rei and Maçanet-Massanes via Mataró. Check the railway operator’s current timetable for your journey. The beaches’ proximity to RENFE stations and metro buses can be useful when planning days by the water.
