Llerona: Churches, Chapels and History
Accommodation in Llerona
Llerona is a good choice if you want to consider church architecture, local history and cultural routes when planning your trip. Its historical evidence varies in date and form: Santa Maria de Llerona combines a parish documented since the 10th century with a fortified medieval building; other chapels have their own dates and local associations. There are also routes offering different ways to get around. These themes can help you choose a hotel in Llerona and shape your stay around culture, festival dates or activity.
Churches and chapels: different periods
The parish of Santa Maria de Llerona has been documented since the 10th century. The present building is a fortified medieval structure with two rectangular towers dating from the 15th century; it also preserves an older Romanesque portal. Early parish history and later architectural features can thus be seen side by side. Santa Maria is designated a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional (BCIN).
Sant Iscle de Llerona also has its own parish history: it once served as a parish, like Santa Maria. Around 1200, the parish priest moved there to live. The rural surroundings include the fields around Sant Iscle; Can Guilla is a short distance away.
The chapels offer different points of reference in time. The chapel of Santa Digna was altered and rebuilt in the 16th century. The chapel of Can Riembau dates from the 18th century and has a small apse. Santa Margarida stands outside the grounds of the Can Màrgens farmhouse; the year 1827 is engraved on its door. The chapel of Mare de Déu del Roser is located on the threshing floor of the Can Rovira de Villar farmhouse, where Mass was once celebrated weekly.
Routes by theme and mode of transport
The architectural heritage route leads to remains from Roman times preserved in Llerona’s parish church and ends at the chapel of Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria. A cultural route for cycling and mountain biking takes you to Santa Maria de Llerona and the sites of historical remembrance in Rosanes.
Another walking option is La ruta verda of the municipality of les Franqueses del Vallès: a 16-kilometre circular route. It can be started in any district of the municipality and completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Farmhouses in the municipality, as well as churches, the town hall and the Torre de Seva, are marked with vertical signs as points of tourist interest. The route climbs gradually towards Turó de les Mentides, from where there is a wide-ranging panorama. Both the route length and the possible ways of getting around provide practical guidance when choosing your route.
The cultural route is intended for cycling and mountain biking. La ruta verda also lists walking and horse riding as options. You can therefore choose between routes based on whether you want to visit an architectural site or prefer a circular route with a stated length and several ways of getting around.
Festivals and when they take place
The Festa Major de Llerona takes place around 11 September. The Festa de la Mongeta del Ganxet takes place in Llerona in late November. The two dates fall at different times of the year, offering different points of reference for planning a trip. If you want to travel specifically for one of the festivals, check the announced dates in advance.
