For your trip to Lavit, the local history and landscape offer a variety of points of interest: sacred buildings, traces of the former castle, and a history of milling that extends from grain and other crafts to papermaking. Vineyards are also part of the town’s character. This means you can explore Lavit from several perspectives rather than limiting your stay to a single building.

Churches, Castle Traces and Historic Landmarks

Santa Maria de Lavit is a church of Romanesque origins; the original church building dates from the 13th century. It was built as the chapel of Lavit Castle, which has been documented since 956. The church grounds are part of the protected BCIN R-I-51-5746 heritage site, which safeguards the remains of the former castle. Santa Maria de Lavit is also listed in Torrelavit’s official register of places of interest.

Another architectural landmark is the Rectoria de Lavit. It has medieval origins and was completely remodelled around 1760. Its gallery features eight round arches supported by Solomonic columns. This combination of early origins and later remodelling adds to the story of the church and the castle.

The Creu de terme de Lavit marks the former parish boundary between Santa Maria de Lavit and Santa Magdalena del Pla del Penedès. Its history spans several stages: it was reconstructed in 1931, destroyed again later that decade, and re-erected at its original site in 1981. The Capelleta-fita de Sant Isidre stands in a vineyard at the entrance to Lavit, on the BV-2246 road. It honours Sant Isidre, the patron saint of agriculture, and may date from the mid-19th century.

Earlier religious customs are also part of the town’s history. The Vot de poble de Lavit a Sant Sebastià was observed in Lavit and Pla del Penedès on 20 January. The agricultural community celebrated it with a sung mass and the recitation of Goigs in honour of the saint; the tradition is no longer observed. During the also-historic Festa de la Santa Creu, worshippers processed from the Capelleta-fita de Sant Isidre to the Creu de Lavit and blessed the parish area there. This celebration is no longer observed either.

A more recent cultural landmark is the work “Homenatge al raïm” by Ferran Capdevila. In a selection held in 2008, the residents of Torrelavit chose the work, with 59 votes, to remain permanently in Torrelavit.

Mills and the History of Water

The first mention of the Molí de Lavit dates from 1327; at that time, it was a grain mill below Lavit Castle. Before being converted into a paper mill in the first decade of the 20th century, it also served as an oil mill and a forge. Paper factories located along the riverbanks contributed to Lavit’s historical development. The sequence of uses makes the mill a tangible example of changing local production.

The Molí Pelleter, formerly called Molí d’en Dias de Lavit, is associated with a concession dated 3 October 1758 to build a paper mill and a fulling mill on the River Bitlles near Lavit. The Centre d’Interpretació de l’Aigua de Torrelavit explains the importance of water for households, irrigation and industry, as well as the relationship between the River Riudebitlles and its tributaries and Torrelavit’s history and landscape. It also explores the history of twelve paper mills that made Torrelavit an important centre of the paper industry from the 17th to the 20th century.

Vineyard Landscape and Routes in Torrelavit

Historical descriptions of Lavit mention vineyards, grain fields, gardens and grain mills as features of its agricultural landscape. The stretch of El CamĂ del Riu through Torrelavit offers a different perspective on the surrounding area: it includes a riverside path, waterside vegetation, several well-preserved paper mills and a vineyard landscape with pine forests.

For cycling, three Penedès 360º routes pass through the municipality of Torrelavit or run along its edge. The information about El Camí del Riu and the cycling routes answers different questions: the path section is characterised by its riverside and mill landscape, while the cycling routes are described by their course within or along the edge of the municipality. Together with the historic churches and mills, these offer a range of themes to help you plan your trip.
