Dosrius: History, Festivals and Nature
Accommodation in Dosrius
Dosrius offers several starting points for planning a trip: historic sites, recurring festivals and outdoor activities. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Dosrius, you can first decide whether cultural heritage, a festival date or outdoor pursuits should be the main focus.
Historic Sites and Their Place in Time
The ruins of Castell de Dosrius stand on a hill close to the village, at an altitude of 295 m. The earliest documents mentioning the castle date from 1114 and 1128. This provides a chronological context for its documented history without equating those references with a construction date.
Dosrius’s historic centre developed around the parish church of Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria. It has been documented since 1304 and was extended in the 16th century. Sant Esteve de Canyamars is first directly documented in 1324, when it is referred to as a subsidiary church of Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria de Dosrius in the Diocese of Barcelona.
The Cova Sepulcral de la Costa de Can Martorell, also known as the Cova de la Vinya d'en Tit, is a collective burial site dating back more than 4,000 years, from the Chalcolithic period. Its function as a communal burial place and its association with the Chalcolithic period give it a different historical context from the churches mentioned in written records.
The Ermita de Sant Llop is a chapel built in 1740 under the patronage of Sant Llop, the co-patron saint of Dosrius. The founding of the Santuari del Corredor is attributed to Salvi Arenes. Apparently, around 1530, with the bishop’s express permission, he built a chapel on Corredor mountain in honour of Nostra Senyora del Socors.
Festivals on Different Dates
The Aplec de muntanya de Canyamars takes place in the municipality of Dosrius on the second weekend of September. It includes Sardana dancing, invited coblas, dancing and the traditional communal dinner known as Mongetada popular. The Aplec de Sant Llop takes place on 1 September, when traditional protective bread rolls are blessed. These dates offer two different points of reference if a festival is a factor in choosing when to travel.
The Plantada del Maig takes place in Dosrius. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the date for the relevant year.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
The restored Camà Ral connects Dosrius with Canyamars. It crosses mostly flat terrain and retains the Sauló surface typical of the area. A mountain-bike ride to the Pou de Glaç de Canyamars is classed as easy and follows mostly tracks. These are different kinds of route information: for the Camà Ral, the focus is on the connection, terrain and surface; for the mountain-bike ride, on the difficulty level and the predominant surface.
Bosc Vertical-Dosrius has four courses with more than 80 activities of varying difficulty. These include zip lines up to 110 m long, 22 m-long Tarzan swings, bridges, tunnels, walkways and nets.
Rukimon – Rucs del Corredor is a park where all the donkey breeds of the Iberian Peninsula live together. It is located in the Canyamars valley (Dosrius), in the Parc Natural del Montnegre-Corredor. Rukimon offers family donkey rides, hiking opportunities and routes for children. The Escola de Natura del Corredor works in environmental communication and education, develops educational programmes, information and awareness-raising campaigns and teaching materials, and carries out nature research.
Landscape in the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor
In the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor, extensive pine forests with Aleppo pines along the coastal side give way to holm oak, oak and cork oak forests in the interior of the massif. The varied landscape also includes cultivated land, forests and farmhouses. This regional variation in the landscape is another consideration when planning a stay, alongside the specific historic sites and activities.
