Castellar Del Riu: Peaks, Trails and Festival Traditions
Accommodation in Castellar Del Riu
Castellar del Riu can be explored through its mountain peaks, trails, religious buildings and local festival traditions. These themes offer different ways to plan your stay: you may be interested in hiking destinations, examining the architectural styles of the churches or timing your visit to coincide with a festival. Smaller places, such as springs and historic sites, are also among the municipality’s attractions.
Peaks and trails
CogullĂł d'Estela is a limestone mountain 1,869 metres high, visited by many hikers. Roc d'AurĂł reaches 1,948 metres and is one of the peaks in the Rasos de Peguera range. This makes Roc d'AurĂł 79 metres higher than CogullĂł d'Estela. The two elevations give you a concrete point of comparison without indicating anything about the difficulty or duration of a hike.
The GR-107 Camà dels Bons Homes passes through Castellar del Riu on its Queralt–Gósol section. The route can be travelled on foot, on horseback and by bicycle. Another connection is the Camà d'Avià a Campllong: at Collada Gran, it joins the route towards Espinalbet. Historically, it served to connect the churches of Sant Vicenç d'Espinalbet and Sant Martà de Coforb.
Font d'Espinalbet can also be described in relation to a specific route. This restored spring, with urban street furniture, lies by the Torrent de Tagast, on the path to the church of Sant Vicenç d'Espinalbet. It complements the larger hiking destinations with a smaller place of its own character and setting.
Churches, chapels and historic traces
Santuari de Corbera is an architectural complex comprising a church, a rectory and a former inn. The word “former” is important here: the inn is part of the building’s history, not a statement about current accommodation options. Sant Llorenç dels Porxos, in turn, is a single-nave chapel on a rocky slope in the Serra dels Lladres. Its location offers exceptional views. Sant Salvador de Vilaverd is a single-nave, rectangular church with a semicircular apse.
Santa Coloma de Can Cabra also has a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan; the church is next to Masia Can Cabra. The platform at Castell d'Espinalbet may have been the base of a defensive tower; this does not establish that any visible tower remains exist. The castle is also associated with the holdings of the troubadour Guillem de BerguedĂ .
The Pi de les Tres Branques stands at Pla de Campllong. An interpretation dating to a 2012 source links the tree both to the Països Catalans and to the Trinity. The Aplec del Pi de les Tres Branques takes place on the third Sunday in July in Campllong. The procession includes the Cobla Pirineu, the giant figures of Espinalbet and the Trabucaires de Castellar del Riu, as well as the entourage of the young Jaume I, Guillem de Montrodon and his children’s court.
Festivals and local cuisine
The Gala de Corbera also has a set date: it takes place on the Sunday after 8 September and includes a performance of the Ball de la Coca. The Festa de Sant Salvador de Vilaverd falls on 4 August; it includes a morning mass and the distribution of traditional bread. Before travelling to an event, check the local programme for the current edition.
The Esmorzar Trabucaire offers black peas, patates emmascarades, tastet, black pudding, bacon and Posima Trabucaire. The menu may change. The event is open to everyone and ends with a route to emblematic places in Castellar del Riu. It combines food with a group walk; check the current programme locally in advance.
Practical information
On-demand transport can be reserved for access to the municipality. Stops are located at the town hall and the Els Roures restaurant; if you would like to use this option, plan ahead to make a reservation. Xalet-Refugi de Rasos de Peguera offers meals and accommodation. If you plan to make use of this option, check current availability. The Refugi should be understood as a separately named accommodation option, not as a statement about hotel amenities.
When deciding what to focus on during your trip, the differences between these offerings can be helpful: elevation figures put the peaks in context, route descriptions show specific connections, and event dates provide a timeframe. Churches, chapels and historical interpretations offer another way to experience Castellar del Riu’s culture. This can help you decide which aspects of the town you would like to prioritise during your stay.
