Borredá combines forested landscapes with waterfalls, routes and historic buildings. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you would mainly like to explore the natural surroundings, plan routes or learn about the municipality’s architectural history. Each of these different themes gives your stay its own focus.

A landscape of forests and waterways

The landscape of Borredá is shaped by pine, holm oak and beech forests. There are also extensive areas of scrubland and pasture; farmland accounts for only a small part of the area. The landscape described therefore ranges from wooded areas to open spaces.

The Margansol and Merlès waterways are also part of the municipality’s natural surroundings. Numerous springs, gorgs and waterfalls are associated with them. One specific natural attraction is the Gorg del Salt on the Riera Margansol. Its waterfall is about 20 metres high, and the gorg also has a pool of considerable size. The waterway, approximate height and pool give a more precise picture of this natural feature.

The Cova de Rotgers offers another aspect of nature. Its underground passage descends from east to west and is about 920 metres long. It is the longest cave in the Berguedà comarca and the only one there formed in gypsum. Access is considered difficult; bear this limitation in mind if you are planning a visit.

Routes and different ways to plan

The Estovalles de Borredà comprises five excursions with different levels of difficulty. GPS tracks for these five routes are available in GPX and KMZ formats. The difficulty levels help you distinguish between the excursions on this basis. In addition, 15 route tracks have been published for the area around Borredà. These figures refer to collections described in different ways: for the five Estovalles excursions, difficulty levels and file formats are specified; for the 15 route tracks, the number is given.

Another way to combine a route with architectural history is the path from Borredà to Sant Sadurní de Rotgers. It follows the old road from Borredà into the valley where the church stands. This lets you plan a route to a specific destination whose architecture and historical record provide a distinct focus.

Churches and architectural history

Sant Sadurní de Rotgers is a small, single-nave building with a slightly pointed vault and a semicircular apse on the east side. It was first mentioned in 888, when the name Palau Rodegari was used. The church was renovated in the 12th century.

The first construction of Santa Maria de Borredà is mentioned in 886. This date relates to a different building from the first mention of Sant Sadurní. The municipality also contains various examples of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. When exploring Borredá’s architectural history, you can therefore consider both specific historical references and different architectural styles.

Visits to Sant Sadurní de Rotgers are scheduled for the first Sunday of the month at 10, 11 and 12 a.m., and at other times by appointment. Before your visit, check whether an appointment is possible at the stated times, especially if you would like to come on a day other than the first Sunday.

Planning your journey and stay

Road and public transport are listed as travel options; route planning is available for travel by road. Check the specific connections before your trip. When planning your stay, you can weigh up the different focuses: the forests and waterscapes, the routes on offer, or the churches and their architectural history. Information about visiting hours and travel options will help you tailor your plans to the places you want to see.
