Argés: Reservoir, Trails and Architectural History
Accommodation in Argés
Argés lies in a transition zone between the plain and the first foothills of the Montes de Toledo. Two themes are particularly prominent when planning a trip: the landscape and waterways on the one hand, and architectural history on the other. You can therefore decide how to approach the town depending on whether you are more interested in outdoor trails, the reservoir or architectural landmarks.
Landscape, water and trails
La Sisla is historically associated with the medieval monastery of San Bartolomé de la Sisla; its trails and landscapes are also popular with hikers. Its appeal therefore spans medieval history as well as trails and landscapes of interest to hikers.
The Embalse del Guajaraz reservoir lies within the municipality of Argés, about three kilometres from the town centre. It is navigable and a popular spot for fishing for carp and pike. This gives visitors two specific reasons to enjoy the same body of water: boating and fishing for the two fish species mentioned.
The area around the Arroyo Guajaraz has riverside spots and green spaces for walks and outdoor activities. The trails there offer easy routes close to the town centre of Argés. This sets it apart from La Sisla: the Arroyo is known above all for its nearby trails and riverside greenery, while La Sisla offers a different focus, with its landscapes and hiking trails.
Buildings and history
Casa Medrano was declared a “Casa de Interés Nacional” (House of National Interest). The former Baroque manor house has two storeys and a hipped roof. This type of roof also has sloping end faces. Its designation, former use as a manor house and specific architectural features each provide a different way to understand the building.
Torre Cervatos offers a different architectural style. The rectangular tower has ashlar masonry at its corners, while the rest is built of rubble stone. The structure was probably commissioned in the 14th century as a watchtower to protect the surrounding land from raids. Torre Cervatos thus combines a clearly described form with a historically plausible purpose.
The parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de San Eugenio Mártir, adds another style to the picture: following restoration work, it has a Neoclassical design. Together with the Baroque Casa Medrano, it offers a concise comparison of two different architectural styles in Argés.
