Ajofrín combines historic buildings with the musical history associated with Jacinto Guerrero and regional specialities. The compact town centre is easy to explore on foot. The town lies at an altitude of 770 metres in the heart of the Montes de Toledo and is surrounded by cultivated land, dehesa and scrubland. The townscape and landscape thus offer two different perspectives for planning your trip.

Townscape and historic architecture

The parish church of Santa María Magdalena dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. Its architecture marks the transition from the Gothic-Mudéjar style to the Renaissance. Beneath the choir gallery is a polychrome alfarje in the Isabelline style, dated to 1480. This specific year refers to the alfarje; the dating of the church as a whole, by contrast, indicates a period.

Casa Grande is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monumento category and dates from the 16th to 17th centuries. Its portal has a separate date: its berroqueña stone base, style and decoration place it in the 15th century. The dates therefore refer to different parts and scales of the building.

The Ruta de las Casas Solariegas offers the chance to visit urban areas with buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Its focus on historic houses and town areas differs from the Ruta de la Música, which is dedicated to Maestro Jacinto Guerrero and music.

The complex popularly known as Cárcel Visigoda is a private fortified house dating from the 12th century in the centre of Ajofrín. Three Roman funerary plaques are set into its walls; the prisoners’ shackles can still be seen on the walls. Visits are possible at weekends. Check locally for visitor information before travelling.

Jacinto Guerrero and the music route

Casa Jacinto Guerrero was the home of composer and music director Jacinto Guerrero Torres. The building dates from the early 20th century and is in the Neo-Mudéjar style. The Museo Jacinto Guerrero displays more than a hundred original photographs, newspaper clippings, sheet music, personal belongings, two pianos, recordings and publications. Admission is free; checking the latest visitor information may be helpful when planning your visit.

The Ruta de la Música can be visited year-round. The municipal tourist information point guides visitor groups along the planned route; arrange group visits locally in advance. A themed visit about the route and the maestro can also be accompanied by live music, including several romances from his zarzuelas.

Regional cuisine and events

The Ruta «Gastronomía ajofrinera» invites visitors to sample traditional products and typical dishes of the Montes de Toledo. Artisan products and delicacies can also be bought in local shops; check what is currently available if you have specific items in mind. Traditional sweets from Ajofrín include pastas de té fino with marzipan, homemade cortadillos, mantecados filled with angel hair and the typical freshly baked rosca de anís.

The Romería del Camino del Pastor Magdaleno takes place on the last Sunday in May. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the local programme.
