Bustares lies on the northern slope of Pico Ocejón, within the protected Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park. The natural surroundings offer sweeping views of the Sierra Norte and the Ocejón massif; visibility depends on the weather. Stone and slate also shape the town’s traditional mountain architecture. The landscape and townscape reveal different sides of the destination: the mountain setting outdoors and the local building traditions in town. When planning your trip, you can focus on hiking or on architecture and history.

Hiking along the Río Cristóbal and in the Ocejón area

The Sendero de los Pueblos Dorados can be accessed from the town centers of Zarzuela de Jadraque, Las Navas de Jadraque, El Ordial, and Bustares. The route is linear and runs in one direction only; it is 16.10 kilometers long, rated moderate, and listed as taking 5.37 hours. Allow for this time and check current route information, trail conditions, and any access restrictions before setting out. The trail follows the Río Cristóbal, crossing it three times on bridges made of gneiss and slate slabs, and offers views of the Sierra del Alto Rey and the peaks of Mojón Cimero and Santotis. The area around Bustares also has hiking trails and traditional paths that lead to higher elevations or pass through nearby forests. There are both a river route with bridge crossings and paths connected with higher ground or nearby forests. Bustares’s proximity to Pico Ocejón makes it a starting point for mountain activities, especially in spring and summer.

Romanesque church and mountain architecture

The Iglesia de San Lorenzo is Bustares’s parish church and the municipality’s main historic landmark. It is a rural Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. Its entrance porch is the most distinctive surviving feature of its original Romanesque style. The masonry is made mainly of gneiss, with quartzite and slate also used. Limestone appears at the corners and in the porch. The style and materials offer two complementary perspectives on the building: its Romanesque porch and the different types of stone used in the masonry.

Patron saint festivities and pilgrimage to Alto Rey

Two places take center stage in the festival calendar: the festivities in honor of San Lorenzo, held in Bustares on August 10, and the Romería del Santo Alto Rey de la Majestad, held on the first Saturday in September at the 1,852-meter summit of Alto Rey. Bustares is also one of the villages in the Serranía whose pilgrims climb to the pilgrimage chapel carrying processional crosses and red flags. The approach to the chapel passes through Bustares, then follows a narrow uphill road and a path. Check the current event schedule and local road and trail conditions when planning your trip.
