Condemios de Abajo is located in the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park and in the Sierra de Ayllón area. The landscape around the town includes the Río Condemios valley, wooded areas, traditional pastures and wide views of the mountain ranges bordering Segovia. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you’ll find highland scenery alongside a compact townscape shaped by stone architecture.

Highland scenery and trails

La Común is a communally used highland area between the Bornova and Sorbe river basins, and includes Condemios de Abajo. The area lies in a mid-mountain landscape at elevations above 1,300 metres. Fresh meadows open up among the pine forests. Peat bogs can form in damp hollows, and cattle graze in the meadows. These features give the landscape a different character from the town’s compact streets.

Peña del Palancar is another of the described landforms: it is a gorge where the rocks slope down towards the deepest part of the canyon. Its slopes are covered by an extensive coniferous forest. The river valley, woodland and highland meadows therefore offer different landscape impressions, without needing to be combined into a single hiking route.

Hiking trails accessible from the municipality pass through oak forests, high-altitude meadows and areas of low scrub. The GR® 167 long-distance trail runs through Condemios de Abajo between the Sorbe and the Bornova. If you hike this trail, signage and trail conditions are important practical points to check; check both before setting out, as they can change.

The GR® 167 and its waypoints

The section of the GR® 167 coming from Albendiego follows the Camino de la Fragua and reaches Condemios de Abajo at kilometre 21.8. The combination of the starting point, named trail and kilometre marker makes it possible to locate the section on the route. Outside Condemios de Abajo, the long-distance trail crosses the GU-213 and then re-enters the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park. These details describe different points along the trail; they should not be mistaken for a walking time.

Hiking is not the only way to explore the town on foot. Other activities described include strolling through the stone streets of Condemios de Abajo. The townscape and high-altitude trails therefore offer distinct focuses: compact streets and traditional buildings shape the impression in town, while the trails pass through forests, meadows and scrubland.

Stone architecture and local heritage

Condemios de Abajo preserves a cohesive townscape of traditional stone architecture. It features thick walls, simple doorways and sloping roofs adapted to the high-altitude climate. The compact streets convey the character of a mountain village whose history is linked to livestock farming. The parish building is part of the local historical heritage and is integrated into the traditional townscape.

The parish church on the edge of town is a simple 16th-century building. Its entrance portal contains a depiction relating to the Blessed Sacrament. The church’s furnishings include folk-style altarpieces with carvings and paintings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The different elements can be dated separately: the building dates from the 16th century, while the furnishings mentioned span several centuries.

Another example of older architecture can be found on a house on Calle Mayor: carved stones and finely intertwined capitals are built into it. They come from a former Romanesque church on the plateau north of the town, on the road to Campisábalos. Condemios de Abajo also belongs to the historic area around Atienza and the medieval-influenced north of Guadalajara province.

Local festivities are concentrated in summer and are connected with Condemios de Abajo’s identity as a mountain village. If you’re interested in the town’s cultural life, these festivities add a seasonal aspect to its historic architecture and trails through the mountain landscape. No specific festivals or event dates are identified here.
