Villamayor de Calatrava offers several starting points for planning a trip: recurring festivals, traces of regional history and a landscape shaped by volcanic formations. Wetlands and paths are also part of the local scenery. The aspect that interests you most may help determine the best time for your stay.

Spring Festivals and Traditions

Every year from 30 April to 2 May, Villamayor de Calatrava celebrates the Fiestas de Mayo and the Romería in honour of the Virgen del Rosario. In recognition of its artistic and cultural value, the tradition was declared an event of regional tourist interest on 20 December 2013. The annual programme may include a range of activities; the specific arrangements can vary from year to year.

The Canto de los Mayos is also performed on the night of 30 April into 1 May and has been documented in Villamayor since at least the 18th century. Another annual celebration is the Romería de San Isidro on 15 May. It takes place in the El Villarejo area, about three kilometres from the town. The saint is carried to the chapel, after which the festivities include a mass and communal meals.

During a May romería, participants stop at the La Cruz estate to sample traditional migas from La Mancha. During the romería from Villamayor to Tirteafuera, the Virgen del Rosario is carried on foot. A traditional encounter between the Virgen and San José takes place by the Río Tirteafuera. These customs make spring a special time to visit for those interested in religious traditions.

Local History and Architecture

The Casa de los Caballeros de Calatrava was once the residence of commanders and is now a local museum. It houses documents, tools and historical objects that tell the story of rural and mining life. The collection thus offers insight into various aspects of the town’s history.

An ancient settlement is evidenced by a Bronze Age burial site and three Visigothic burial sites. The remains are housed in the Provincial Museum of Ciudad Real. A paved Roman road is also part of the historical heritage: it connected Toledo and Córdoba, passed through Villamayor and ran from Puerto de Caracuel to Puerto de la Viñuela. Remnants of the road survive.

Two bridges from different centuries stand on the Río Tirteafuera. The older one dates from the 15th century and has three arches, including semicircular brick arches. A nearby bridge dating from the 16th century has ten arches. Another testament to everyday life in the past is the Lavadero de El Villarejo: this polygonal structure around a well preserves the memory of the village’s former washing place.

Wetlands, Birdlife and Volcanic Terrain

In periods of high rainfall, the volcanic lagoon complex comprises around ten wetlands. Their water levels change with the rainfall, while they are suitable for birdwatching throughout the year. Flamingo colonies can often be spotted in the shallow wetlands. Other species include waders, ducks and geese, herons and harriers, as well as the Spanish imperial eagle, cinereous vulture, falcons and owls. Which animals can be spotted depends on the season and weather.

The Morrón de Villamayor, also known as “el Morrón”, reaches an altitude of 773 metres and rises about 30 metres above the surrounding terrain. Its rounded shape, steep walls and visible lava-flow front illustrate the ancient volcanoes of Campo de Calatrava. Its good state of preservation makes these formations easy to identify.

Trails and Views

Cañadas, cordeles, veredas and other routes run through Villamayor and are suitable for walking and cycling. Trekking in the northern sierras takes you through Mediterranean vegetation. From the summits, you can enjoy views of the plains towards Argamasilla and Almodóvar. These landscape experiences differ from birdwatching in the wetlands: one focuses on ridges and distant views, the other on water and wildlife.

The “El Minero” Geopark route runs from the Morrón de Villamayor to the viewpoint at the Miner’s Monument in Puertollano and has no significant change in elevation. Check the current route conditions before setting out. If you are looking for a hotel in Villamayor de Calatrava, you can plan your trip around your interests: the recurring spring festivals or the natural and landscape attractions. For festival dates, it is advisable to check the programme for that year.
