Accommodation in Manzanares
Historic Buildings and City History
If you’re looking for a hotel in Manzanares, you may first want to consider what you’d like to focus on during your stay. The attractions range from a 13th-century castle and a church with a striking portal to museums dedicated to design, Manchego cheese and milling. A walk featuring planetary models adds a scientific focus to the cultural attractions. This gives you a variety of options to consider when planning your trip.
Castillo de Pilas Bonas was built in the first half of the 13th century by the Order of Calatrava. In 1979, it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest. It is also listed as a tourist attraction open to visitors. Check access arrangements before your visit.
Iglesia Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción has a Latin-cross floor plan, an area of 1,200 m² and five side chapels. Its south portal, on the south façade, dates from the 16th century and is considered one of the finest sculptural ensembles in the province of Ciudad Real. The church is listed as open to visitors; check in advance how access is managed during religious services.
The stately and noble houses also reflect Manzanares’ history: they represent the economic, social and artistic power of local Hidalgo families between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Museums with a Variety of Themes
Museo Manuel Piña preserves and shares the legacy of designer Manuel Piña (1944–1994), who was born in Manzanares. The museum is housed in a 16th-century manor house. Alongside its permanent exhibition, it offers workshops and guided tours; programme details may change. If you’re planning to attend one of these, check the latest information before your trip.
Museo del Queso Manchego is housed in a manor house dating from the late 17th century in the historic centre. It introduces the pastoral background of Manchego cheese and explains how it is made, including how the raw material is obtained. In the tasting room, visitors can sample the product and learn how to identify Queso Manchego correctly. Check the arrangements for tastings before you arrive.
Archivo-Museo Ignacio Sánchez Mejías offers insights into his life through press articles, letters, posters, photographs, recordings, book covers, projections and personal belongings. The collection therefore brings together different types of evidence and media.
Themed Walks, Milling and Nature
Paseo del Sistema Solar is a walk just over one kilometre long, divided into two sections. Scale models of the planets and information panels with scientific facts give the route its theme. The length and layout give you an idea of the format of the walk, while the models and panels provide its content.
Molino Grande offers another way to explore the history of work: the 16th-century grain mill stands on the right bank of the millrace of the Río Azuer, a tributary of the Guadiana. In 2018, it opened to the public as an interpretation centre for traditional milling. Visitors to the complex can see the living quarters used by former millers and follow the grain-processing process from harvest to mill. Check the latest opening arrangements before your visit.
The Río Azuer is recommended as a natural attraction in Manzanares. Part of the municipality is also designated as an area of importance for the Spanish imperial eagle, griffon vulture and lynx. Check current local information about this designation if you wish to include this natural attraction in your plans.
