Minaya brings together religious architecture, historical traces of travel and rural architecture. Four routes explore the rural architecture of the surrounding area, alongside a deeply rooted May tradition and regional cuisine. This offers different ways to plan your trip: historic buildings in the town, Cubillos in the surrounding area, or paths through the agricultural landscape.

Architecture and history in Minaya

The Church of Santiago el Mayor is considered Minaya’s main monument. Its 30-metre-high fortified tower is built of dressed stone. A semi-cylindrical stairwell projects from the outside, and the building also features numerous loopholes and watch openings. The church holds a relic: part of the arm bone of Blessed Alonso Pacheco.

Built in the 16th century, the House of the Lords of Minaya preserves in its courtyard the remains of columns and arches from an earlier arcaded gallery or cloister. Opposite is a chapel in the Renaissance style. The two buildings offer different points of interest for visitors interested in the town’s religious and aristocratic architecture.

The history of travel is also present in Minaya. The MesĂłn Parador is a large inn dating from the late 17th century. On the former royal road from Madrid to Cartagena, its spacious courtyard accommodated carriages, mule trains, caravans and travellers. El Molino was almost completely reconstructed in the early 1970s. The mill stands beside the N-301 and is considered a symbol of the Manchegan plain and grain cultivation; it is also associated with Cervantes and his work Don Quixote.

The Estación de Minaya adds railway history to these historical connections. The Compañía de Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Zaragoza y Alicante (MZA), the concessionary company for the Alcázar–Albacete line, built the station between 1855 and 1865. The initials MZA can be seen on the tiles at the back.

Routes and rural architecture

Minaya offers four routes for exploring the rural architecture of the surrounding area. Cycling is recommended as the ideal way to get around, and spring and autumn are considered the best seasons. One of the routes returns to its starting point at Minaya Town Hall after approximately 22 kilometres. Check the latest route information before planning your trip.

Route 2 passes the Cubillo de MarĂa Galindo. The structure is plastered inside and out, and an opening in the dome serves as a chimney. The Cubillos in the surrounding area also vary in shape: 118 structures have been recorded, built exclusively from stone slabs. Only four have a square or rectangular ground plan rather than a circular one.

Many Cubillos in the surrounding area have wall cupboards, seating and fireplaces with chimneys. They also feature wooden hooks and small windows; some additionally have feeding troughs for working animals. Minaya’s agricultural landscape is well suited to cycling routes and walks among vineyards. You can choose between viewing individual examples of rural architecture and following a route through the landscape.

Los Mayos and Minaya’s cuisine

Los Mayos is a deeply rooted tradition in Minaya. On 30 April, the May song is performed for the Virgin Mary and the town’s honorary ladies. If you plan your trip around this tradition, check the specific programme dates: the annual programme may vary.

Minaya’s traditional cuisine includes Migas, Gachas, Gazpachos and game dishes, accompanied by wines from La Manchuela. The town’s food scene is centred around Plaza Mayor. This combination of dishes and wine offers a different perspective on the town from its buildings and routes.

Two different seasonal considerations can help with planning: Los Mayos is associated with 30 April, while spring and autumn are considered the best seasons for the routes. You can make your choice based on whether you want your trip to focus on the tradition or on the rural architecture and landscape.
