Mahora brings together a historic center, religious heritage, local festive traditions and routes along the Valdemembra. Wide streets, whitewashed facades with stone portals and traditional squares shape the townscape. Different themes can guide your travel plans: cultural sightseeing in town, trails along the river, or festivals and regional cuisine.

Church and historic center

The parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, the Iglesia de la Asunción, is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). Its architecture combines Gothic, Neoclassical and Baroque-Rococo elements. The church was probably built during the 16th century under the patronage of the Marquis of Villena; his coat of arms appears on the keystones of the vaults. The church also houses a 17th-century Hispano-Filipino ivory crucifix.

The houses also offer insights into the town’s history: among the buildings in the urban area are former residences of noble families from the 16th to the 18th centuries, with coats of arms on their facades. Mahora also has the Ruta de los Escudos. The Ruta del Valle del Cabriel highlights the water tower in the square as a point of interest. The municipal administration is now located at Plaza de La Mancha 7. The building was probably a storehouse for collecting taxes and likely dates from the 16th or 17th century.

Town route, river trails and landscape

The Camino Natural del Río Valdemembra runs for 121 kilometers from its source in Chumillas, in the province of Cuenca, to its mouth in Mahora, in the province of Albacete. Maps, elevation profiles and GPS tracks are available online for hikers and cyclists who want to follow the route independently. A different scale is offered by a town route with several cultural sights to visit in Mahora.

There are also hiking and cycling routes along the Valdemembra. From rural paths, viewpoints look out toward the Júcar Valley. Another scenic spot is Charco Azul: near Bolinches, within the municipality of Mahora, it joins the Júcar and forms one of the calmest and deepest stretches of water along this section of the river. Charco Azul is also a small area of riverside vegetation near the Barranco de La Hoz del Valdemembra. The routes and this stretch of water offer different perspectives on the landscape, without implying that they form a single combined route.

Festivals throughout the year

The San Antón festival includes a pilgrimage into the countryside, an auction and a traditional pig slaughter. The celebration also features tastings of Gachas and a muddy rice dish made from the slaughter. The patron saint festivals honor the Virgen de Gracia on August 15 and Saint Roch, San Roque, on August 16.

During Holy Week, processions take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The most important day is Easter Sunday, with the Procession of the Encounter: the Quintos present bouquets of flowers to the Virgin, known as Albicias. Local singing traditions also have a date of their own on the calendar. The traditional song Folías a la Virgen is sung on the Saturday after April 30. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these celebrations, check the dates for your planned visit.

Local cuisine and wine

Mahora’s winter cuisine includes Atascaburras, Gachas, Migas de Pastor, Ajoaceite and Tortilla de Harina. In local bars, wines from the D.O. Manchuela are paired with traditional tapas, cheese and produce from the vegetable gardens. Seasonal dishes and regional wines thus offer different aspects of the local food culture.

Bodega Cantos offers guided tours of its facilities, wine tastings, tasting courses and gastronomic experiences. Check the specific visitor arrangements before you travel. The winery’s preserved features include concrete amphorae and the original vertical press; the press is no longer in use.
