Discover Las Vegas
Accommodation in Las Vegas
Las Vegas, the oldest settlement in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, combines the history of a traditional Canarian hamlet with several described trails and an annual dance tradition. This gives you different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the history of early settlement, trails with distinct routes, and the Danza de Varas.
A Hamlet with a History
Las Vegas is considered the oldest settlement in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. It was also the site of the first colonial settlement in the Abona region after the conquest of Tenerife. The hamlet preserves the character of a traditional Canarian settlement, as well as its ethnographic and historical heritage.
The historic hamlet grew around the Nuestra Señora de La Esperanza hermitage, built during the colonial period. The hermitage preserves several architecturally interesting features. The PR-TF 83.5 Las Vegas–Los Hibrones–La Abejera begins right beside it, so the named trailhead is located at a site that is also part of the hamlet’s history.
Trails with Different Routes
The short circular PR-TF 83.2 Circular de Las Vegas trail is for exploring the hamlet. The PR-TF 83.3, also described as a circular trail, initially follows the Camino Real del Sur before returning to Las Vegas. The two routes therefore differ in their described courses: one explores the hamlet, while the other follows the Camino Real del Sur back to its starting point.
The PR-TF 83.4 Camino Real Granadilla-Las Vegas connects two places: the town centre of Granadilla and Las Vegas. Its historic features include original paved sections and religious landmarks such as crosses and calvaries. Along this trail, the Camino Real’s inherited character is as much a focus as the destination.
The PR-TF 83.1 begins on Calle Guajara and climbs steadily northwest before joining the PR-TF 83 to Paisaje Lunar. It connects Las Vegas with Los Escurriales, an area popularly known as Paisaje Lunar. The route passes through farmland and pine forest, then runs parallel to a lava flow to the foot of Risco del Muerto. This sequence describes the trail from its ascent on Calle Guajara through different landscapes to its junction with the PR-TF 83.
The PR-TF 83.3 is also associated with a historic way of life: along the trail, the former use of the forest by local residents for subsistence is described. This practice continued until the 1980s. The circular trail thus combines its route along the Camino Real del Sur with a glimpse of how the forest was once used.
The Danza de Varas of Las Vegas
The Danza de Varas of Las Vegas is a ritual dance performed every year on 26 July in Las Vegas, on the south side of Tenerife. Seven dancers are linked by palm sticks covered in coloured paper. Stringed instruments accompany the dance as it makes its way through the hamlet on one day of the year, together with residents and former residents.
If you want to take the tradition into account when planning your trip, 26 July is the specific annual date to bear in mind. Check event dates before making plans. When choosing a hotel, you may also want to consider whether the hamlet’s history, the different trail routes, or the local dance tradition is most important to you.
