Las Aguas combines a natural pebble beach, a coastal path and the La Cruz y San Pedro festival. If you are looking for a hotel in Las Aguas, you can plan your trip around different interests: time at the bathing areas, a stroll along the avenue beside the beach, the Sendero Las Aguas to Barrio del Rosario, or a visit during the festival.

Coast, beach and tidal pools

Playa de Las Aguas is a natural pebble beach with natural bathing areas. An avenue beside the beach offers visitors space to stroll and relax. The Charco de La Laja tidal pool is also near Las Aguas, on the coast at the edge of San Juan de la Rambla’s town centre. It consists of basaltic lava flows and pyroclasts.

The Sendero Las Aguas

The Sendero Las Aguas runs from Las Aguas to Barrio del Rosario. It is an earth-and-stone path along the coastal platform and also serves as a viewpoint overlooking the sea. The path passes tamarisks, reeds and agaves, as well as potato and banana fields. Its focus differs from that of the avenue beside the beach: the avenue offers space for walking and relaxation, while the Sendero leads to Barrio del Rosario and provides sea views along the coastal platform.

Volcanic landscape and surroundings

Las Aguas was built on the remains of an ancient volcanic lava flow. The village landscape brings together white houses, black rocks, green plantations and the blue sea. From Las Aguas, there are direct views of the steep terraces of Los Alenes and the Mazapé headland. Nearby, the Barranco de Ruiz is designated an area of scientific interest; it preserves remnants of laurel forest, thermophilous woodland and rock communities. Also in the area, the Acantilados, Ladera del Barranco de la Chaurera y Ruiz complex contains numerous residential and burial caves.

La Cruz y San Pedro and the fishing tradition

The La Cruz y San Pedro festival takes place on the second weekend of July; the specific calendar dates change each year. Check the programme for the relevant year before your trip, as programme details may vary from year to year. A procession carrying San Pedro leaves the square, passes through the neighbourhood and continues along Avenida de Las Aguas to the beach. Las Aguas’ fishermen are part of the local fishing activity; the San Pedro festival celebrated today is considered an expression of maritime devotion and tradition. As part of a tourism initiative, a memorial garden honouring the sea and the work of fishermen was unveiled on Avenida de Las Aguas in 2016. The original design consisted of four large fish traps filled with metal fish and a large anchor commemorating the former landing place at the old harbour of Las Aguas.
