Alcalá combines a varied coastline with swimming spots, water sports and glimpses of local life. When choosing where to stay, you can focus on different things: a bay with grey sand and volcanic lapilli, natural pools and tidal pools, a dive site, the weekly market and traces of the former fish-processing industry. This lets you combine time by the sea with impressions of the town, coastline and underwater world.

Coast and swimming spots

Playa de Alcalá is a bay with grey sand and volcanic lapilli; next to it is a small pier with fishing boats. The coastline also has natural seawater pools, small sandy beaches and tidal pools. The natural pools of La Jaquita were shaped by lava and time and offer calm places to swim.

The difference between the swimming areas is easy to picture: grey sand and the pier define the shoreline at the beach, while La Jaquita is known for its lava-formed pools and calm swimming spots. Numerous marine species live in the tidal pools and along the clear seabed off the coast of Alcalá.

Alcalá’s level, accessible seafront promenade has ramps and walkways connecting it to swimming areas and natural pools. The La Jaquita seafront promenade offers a peaceful setting and expansive coastal views; the cycle path there runs along the entire promenade.

Water sports and diving

Various water sports can be enjoyed from Playa de Alcalá. For diving, Arrecife de Alcalá is a dive site for all experience levels, with a maximum depth of 20 metres. Its rich marine life includes octopuses, moray eels and schools of colourful fish.

Getting around and getting there

Playa de Alcalá can be reached on foot via an easy route or by car. There is parking at the beach, as well as a connection to regional bus services. Check these transport details before travelling, as they may change.

Weekly market and cuisine

The Mercado Agrotradicional de Guía de Isora takes place on Mondays from 8:00 to 13:00 at Paseo La Jaquita, next to the tourist information office. The specific location and time give you a clear reference point when planning your visit for the week.

Restaurants in the centre of Alcalá serve typical coastal dishes; fresh fish and seafood are available around the beach. Individual businesses may change their offerings.

Local history and events

The buildings of a fish-canning factory that operated in the 20th century have been preserved in Alcalá; today they are used for a different purpose. The former fish-processing industry is therefore one of the town’s historical features.

The annual events calendar includes a Christmas and gospel concert at the Centro Cultural de Alcalá. If you would like to attend, check the specific event date before travelling.
