Several routes in the area around the Los Ajaches Natural Monument are central to planning a trip around Las Casitas De Femés. They offer different points of interest: one runs through the northern valleys to Playa del Pozo, while two others are associated with sweeping views of the protected natural area and Lanzarote. The area also features rock art, traces of former pastoral farming, and dry vegetation. When choosing a destination with natural and cultural attractions, you can consider both the route and the views it offers. Los Ajaches brings routes and landscapes together.

Routes and views

The “LAS CASITAS-BCO. HIGUERAL-PLAYA POZO-PLAYA QUEMADA” route leads from the hamlet of Las Casitas through the northern valleys of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument to Playa del Pozo. It is accessed from Las Casitas. Before setting out, check the local route conditions and access.

The “LAS CASITAS-FEMES” route offers views across much of the protected Los Ajaches Natural Monument, the Vega de Femés, and Lanzarote. The “LAS CASITAS-PICO NAOS-PLAYA QUEMADA” route opens up sweeping views of Los Ajaches and the northern and western parts of the island; it too is accessed from Las Casitas. Both routes take in views of Los Ajaches. The other viewpoints may help you choose between them: one also takes in the Vega de Femés and a panorama of the island, while the other looks out over the northern and western parts of Lanzarote.

Rock art and landscape history

Pico Naos is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) and features inscriptions carved into the rock as well as rock drawings. Las Casitas 1 is an archaeological site with rock engravings. The wider area of Los Ajaches in Yaiza also contains caves, rock engravings, and traces of former pastoral farming. The cultural significance therefore ranges from individual rock-art sites to traces of past land use across the wider landscape. To understand these features, it is helpful to distinguish the specific information about Pico Naos and Las Casitas 1 from the characteristics of the wider area.

Vegetation in the Natural Monument

Dry scrubland grows in the Los Ajaches area, with tabaibal vegetation in sheltered places. These types of vegetation add another perspective on the natural area alongside the routes’ sweeping views. If you would like to look beyond the panoramas, vegetation is also among the features that shape the landscape of Los Ajaches. The routes’ views are thus complemented by the characteristics of the area itself.
