Puerto de las Nieves: Coast, Sea and Culture
Accommodation in Puerto de las Nieves
Puerto de las Nieves offers several starting points for planning a trip: the coast and sea, trails, cultural heritage and Agaete’s seafood cuisine. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these aspects you want to focus on during your stay. The beaches and dive sites offer practical guidance, as do the traditions surrounding the fiestas in August.
Coast, Pools and Water Sports
Playa de Las Nieves is a pebble beach by the current pier, with calm waters. It is known for its crystal-clear water; conditions can vary seasonally. The beach is considered easy to access and a place for swimming and water sports. As access conditions may change, check them before your visit.
Las Salinas consists of three natural pools connected by tunnels. The area can be reached on foot from Avenida Paseo de los Poetas; check access before your visit. The pools allow divers to observe the local marine flora and fauna. Check conditions on site before diving.
Las Merinas is another dive site near the Dedo de Dios natural monument. There, rocks rise to the surface a few metres from the beach. Connected passages and short canyons shape the dive. Check conditions and suitability before diving. Surfing, windsurfing, diving and sailing are also among the water sports available in Puerto de las Nieves. What is possible depends on sea conditions and local operators.
Rocks and Trails
Dedo de Dios, also known as Roque Partido, is a rock formation separated from the surrounding rock mass and the most distinctive sight in Puerto de las Nieves. The cliffs rise from the sea to the Pinar de Tamadaba and shape the area’s landscape.
For hikers, the GR® 131 is a specific point of reference: the trail was officially approved as the Puerto de Las Nieves–Pico de Las Nieves–Playa del Burrero route. The approval was published in the BoletĂn Oficial de Canarias in April 2025. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Culture and Festive Traditions
The Paseo de los Poetas runs through Puerto de las Nieves and is dedicated to the modernist writers Alonso Quesada, Tomás Morales and Saulo TorĂłn. The Ermita de las Nieves also connects the area to its history: it was built in the second half of the 16th century at the behest of AntĂłn Cerezo. The chapel houses a 16th-century Flemish triptych called “TrĂptico de Ntra. Sra. de las Nieves.”
The fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves were declared to be of National Tourist Interest in 1972. The town’s main festival is celebrated every year on 5 August; the image is housed in the chapel in Puerto de las Nieves. On 4 August, the Bajada de la Rama takes place: dancers carry branches to the shrine of the Virgen de las Nieves as they dance. If you’re planning a trip during the festivities, check the programme in advance.
The Museo de la Rama introduces visitors to the history, traditions and music of the Fiesta de la Rama. It displays images of the celebration and exhibits typical elements such as the PapagĂĽevos. Visiting arrangements may change; check them before your visit.
Agaete’s Seafood Cuisine
At restaurants in Puerto de las Nieves, you can enjoy typical dishes from Agaete’s seafood cuisine. These include fish broth, fresh grilled fish, viejas, grilled sardines and paella marinera. The dishes offered by an individual restaurant may change.
