San Sebastián: City Beach, Art and Pintxos
Accommodation in San Sebastián
San Sebastián has many facets that can shape a stay: La Concha city beach, scenic walks, traces of history, art and the pintxos tradition.
City Beach and Outdoor Walks
Playa de La Concha is in the center of San Sebastián. It is one of the city’s major landmarks and one of Europe’s best-known city beaches. Kayaks and paddleboards are available for hire at the beach; rentals may be seasonal. If you plan to rent one, check the seasonal availability of kayaks and paddleboards before your visit.
On Monte Urgull, paved paths wind through exotic vegetation. Viewpoints offer views of San Sebastián. The mountain also preserves fortifications and part of the historic city wall.
Monte Igeldo offers a different experience: its summit is home to a classic amusement park and outdoor paths. Monte Urgull combines viewpoints with historic fortifications, while Monte Igeldo offers a different experience with its classic amusement park.
Historic Sites and Art
Parte Vieja is San Sebastián’s historic quarter, located between the Urumea River and the port. It preserves the city’s oldest buildings.
Peine del Viento comprises three steel sculptures, each weighing more than nine tonnes. They stand at the far end of Monte Igeldo, where the city meets the sea.
Hondalea is also part of San Sebastián’s art scene. Cristina Iglesias’s sculpture was inaugurated in 2021 in the lighthouse on Santa Clara Island.
Santa Clara and Getting Around
Santa Clara Island has a small beach and paths with picnic areas. Access may be seasonal. The island therefore offers several ways to spend time outdoors in one place: a small beach and paths with picnic areas. Hondalea is also on Santa Clara, inside the lighthouse.
San Sebastián is flat and easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. The paths on Monte Urgull, Monte Igeldo and Santa Clara offer additional outdoor destinations.
Pintxos as Part of Your Visit
Pintxos are an essential part of a visit to San Sebastián. Visitors typically go to several bars, trying one or two pintxos at each stop. When planning your day, it makes sense to set aside a separate round of pintxos as one of your day’s meals.
